About The Position

This position is open to Alaska Residents only. The Division of Juvenile Justice is recruiting to fill Juvenile Probation Officer 1/2 positions located at the Johnson Youth Center in Juneau, AK. This position will be filled at either the 1 or 2 level depending on the applicant’s qualifications and job experience. As a juvenile probation officer (JPO), you will be working to positively influence, motivate, and steer young offenders toward community restoration and developing competencies to lead a productive and crime-free life. JPOs are asked to set high expectations for themselves as well as the youth they work with. The supervision and accountability-based services you provide are designed to promote notable, long-term, positive benefits to the families, youth, and communities that we serve. Through restorative justice, we hold juvenile offenders accountable for their behaviors, promote the safety and restoration of victims and communities, and assist offenders and their families in developing the skills to prevent crime. Requirements

  • Competencies in Psychology: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of human behavior and performance in various contexts, mental processes, or the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Competencies in Integrity/Honesty: Contributes to maintaining the integrity of the organization; displays high standards of ethical conduct and understands the impact of violating these standards on an organization, self, and others; is trustworthy.

  • Training in juvenile justice, criminal justice, criminology, sociology, social work, psychology, guidance and counseling, the behavioral sciences, or a closely related field and/or experience providing juvenile justice probation, adult probation, adult protection services, child protection services, or supervision of juvenile offenders in a juvenile justice facility; or providing care or service to delinquent juveniles.
  • Successful candidates are subject to a background investigation, criminal record check, fingerprinting, and must complete a medical examination.
  • A valid Alaska driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
  • For Juvenile Probation Officer 2: Progressively responsible professional experience providing juvenile justice probation, adult probation, adult protection services, child protection services, or supervision of juvenile offenders in a juvenile justice facility; or providing care or service to delinquent juveniles.
  • Competencies in Decision Making (for JPO 2): Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals; causes change.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise probationers, which requires travel to outlying communities.
  • Assume on-call duties on a rotating basis, after hours in the evenings and on weekends.
  • Provide supervision and accountability-based services designed to promote long-term, positive benefits to families, youth, and communities.
  • Hold juvenile offenders accountable for their behaviors.
  • Promote the safety and restoration of victims and communities.
  • Assist offenders and their families in developing skills to prevent crime.
  • Conduct frequent escort travel within the State for detaining youth.
  • Complete 20 hours of annual one-on-one control tactics training.
