About The Position

The Office of Juvenile Justice is seeking a decisive, highly skilled Tactical Response Major to help lead tactical operations at one of Louisiana’s secure-care facilities. As the Tactical Response Major, you’ll serve as the shift supervisor for the tactical response unit, working closely with the Tactical Response Lieutenant Colonel to ensure readiness, coordination, and rapid response. You’ll manage tactical officers, oversee equipment and training, respond to alarms and incidents, and support facility operations during youth movement, searches, and special events. Your leadership will help protect staff, youth, and the facility while ensuring that tactical decisions are strategic, well-documented, and aligned with agency standards. Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED or one year of experience in any field plus: Three years of experience in a residential, correctional, behavioral health, or group home setting with responsibility for one or more of the following: rehabilitation of delinquent youth, clinical care, custody, or security; OR Three years of experience in Probation and Parole.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
  • In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.
  • The incumbent of this position must not have been convicted or pled nolo contendere to a crime listed in R.S. 15:587.1 (c).
  • Applicants must authorize the HR Office of Juvenile Justice to contact prior employers to check references under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) to be considered for employment.
  • Selected applicant must take and pass a drug screening test.
  • Selected applicant must possess a valid Louisiana Driver's License.
  • Selected applicant must clear a background check.

Responsibilities

  • Leads tactical response operations — Responds to beeper alarms, manages incidents, and coordinates tactical actions to protect life, property, and the environment.
  • Supervises tactical officers — Oversees staff performance, ensures equipment readiness, and maintains all required training and certifications.
  • Implements tactical plans — Interprets strategic direction, coordinates tactical plans, and ensures decisions and rationale are properly documented.
  • Supports facility safety & youth movement — Works with facility leadership to maintain security, assist with youth movement, and conduct searches for contraband.
  • Maintains critical documentation — Completes and reviews reports related to incidents, searches, contraband, and tactical activity.
  • Provides staff oversight & development — Manages attendance and time, prepares CPM evaluations, identifies training needs, and consults with supervisors on personnel matters.
  • Serves on 24-hour call — Performs assigned duties at any time and acts in place of the Tactical Response Lieutenant Colonel when needed.
