About The Position

This is a highly responsible position in the criminal justice system. The employee is expected to perform all duties in an optimum responsible manner, demonstrate leadership by being a positive role model for staff, youth, and the community, and treat all persons with dignity and respect. The role involves adhering to agency or facility policies and procedures, maintaining a safe and secure environment for youth, staff, and oneself. It ensures a safe environment with zero tolerance for escapes, abuse, sexual harassment, and inappropriate conduct by staff with detained youth. The position assists in the operation of a secure detention center, assuring the safe and secure custody of all assigned detained youth while ensuring all constitutional rights are provided, with special concern for legal, medical, and mental health issues. The employee assists supervisors in ensuring that detained youth's services and programming comply with court orders, rules, departmental policies, and Quality Assurance standards. Successful completion of training requirements for dispensing medications to youth is necessary, including distributing medications in the absence of a designated medical health authority or facility nurse. Duties may include performing tasks in Master Control, admissions, releases, and transportation. The role involves supervising youth in all activities, maintaining control through directives, counseling, and appropriate use of Protective Action Response (PAR) as needed. It also includes inspecting the facility, youth, visitors, and packages for contraband, and training/coaching employees on their duties and facility policies. In the supervisor's absence, the employee assumes the acting supervisor's role. Responsibilities include writing reports and preparing required records regarding incidents, youth movement, and noteworthy information, ensuring documentation of all violations. The position involves preparing youth for court appearances and transporting/escorting them to various facilities as needed. Security and emergency equipment are used to ensure safety and security. Specific supervision methods like 10-minute checks, 5-minute checks, or Constant Sight and Uninterrupted Sound Supervision are performed for youth in room confinement or designated as suicidal. The role requires assessing and analyzing information through the Juvenile Justice Information System and initiating and maintaining youth counts. Attending and completing all required training, including CPR, AED, and First Aid, is mandatory. The position requires maintaining a valid driver's license and complying with prompt payment laws.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Must be a high school graduate or its equivalent.
  • Must not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement, or have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
  • Must not have pleaded guilty or no lo contendere to or be found guilty of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement after September 30, 1999.
  • Must abide by all provisions of s. 985.644 (1), regarding fingerprinting and background investigations and other screening requirements for personnel.
  • Must execute and submit to the department an affidavit-of-application form attesting to compliance with specified requirements.
  • Must have a valid Driver License.
  • Must have a three-year acceptable driving record if transporting youth.
  • Must be certified in accordance with State of Florida Department of Juvenile Justice direct care training policy, or obtain such certification within 180 days of employment.

  • Distributing medication in the absence of a designated medical health authority or a facility nurse.
  • Performing duties in Master Control, admissions, releases, and transportation, as necessary.
  • Supervising youth in all activities and maintaining control of detained youth by giving directives, counseling and/or utilizing appropriate levels of verbal or physical use of Protective Action Response (PAR) as needed.
  • Inspecting facility, youth, visitors and packages delivered to the facility for contraband.
  • Training and/or coaching employees concerning their duties and orienting them concerning facility policies and procedures.
  • Assuming acting supervisor’s role in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Writing reports and preparing required records regarding incidents, detained youth movement and noteworthy information.
  • Ensuring the documentation of all violations of facility operating procedures, rules and regulations, and state and federal statutes.
  • Preparing detained youth for court appearances, and transporting and escorting detained youth to medical, criminal justice, social services and judicial facilities as needed.
  • Using security and emergency equipment to ensure the safety and security of the detained youth and the facility.
  • Completing 10-minute checks, 5-minute checks or Constant Sight and Uninterrupted Sound Supervision for every detained youth confined to room confinement or designated as suicidal.
  • Assessing and analyzing information available through the Juvenile Justice Information System.
  • Initiating and maintaining detained youth counts as directed by departmental and facility operating procedures and policies.
  • Attending and successfully completing all training required by DJJ’s Direct Care Training Policy and other training as assigned and required.
  • Utilizing Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), and First Aid techniques and procedures in case of an emergency.
  • Attending required meetings.
  • Maintaining a valid Driver License and reporting any change to his/her supervisor within 72 hours.
  • Complying with the requirements set forth in Section 215.422, Florida Statutes, Prompt Payment Compliance Law.
  • Performing other related duties as required.
