About The Position

This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Nome Juvenile Probation is recruiting to fill an On-Call, Non-Permanent Juvenile Justice Counselor 2 position. This position will work some day, evening, and night shifts as well as on weekends and holidays. Work will be on-call and sporadic. You will ensure the security of youth awaiting transport to the nearest juvenile detention facility while in the Nome Probation Office during assigned shifts. You will occasionally perform escorts from Nome to other Youth Facilities in the State as well as residential treatment centers in and out of the State of Alaska. Through Restorative Justice, we hold juvenile offenders accountable for their behavior; promote the safety and restoration of victims and communities; and assist offenders and their families in developing the skills to prevent crime. Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • Six months of experience, paid or volunteer, teaching or coaching group activities for youth.
  • Must be 20 years of age or older.
  • OR Six months of experience as a Juvenile Justice Counselor 1 with the State of Alaska.
  • AND Demonstrated achievement of department approved performance standards.
  • OR Six months of experience administering, advising on, performing, or supervising corrections, law enforcement, parole, probation, residential treatment casework, or social casework.
  • Completed coursework from an accredited college may substitute for the required work experience (3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours equal one month of work experience).
  • Military experience may substitute for the required work experience on a month for month basis.
  • Successful candidates are subject to a background investigation, criminal record check, and medical examination.
  • A valid driver’s license is required at the time of appointment.
  • Submit educational transcripts if using post-secondary education to qualify.
  • Submit names and contact information of 3 professionals for references.
  • Pass a comprehensive background investigation, which includes a state and FBI fingerprint-based background check.
  • Certify that you have a legal right to accept employment in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the security of youth awaiting transport to the nearest juvenile detention facility while in the Nome Probation Office during assigned shifts.
  • Occasionally perform escorts from Nome to other Youth Facilities in the State as well as residential treatment centers in and out of the State of Alaska.
  • Cover shifts at various times of day, with flexibility for extra hours as needed.
  • Perform off-site duties such as Court, medical, and release escorts.
  • Be on call.
