About The Position

The job duties involve the supervision of juveniles in a detention facility, in groups and individual activities, to assist them in adjusting to detention and to maintain secure custody for their own or for the community’s protection. The work involves providing constructive and satisfying supervised activities adapted to the special needs of children and youth in confinement. It also involves observing, reporting and consulting on the behavior of the juveniles to screen for the undetected mentally or emotionally ill. A team concept is used involving judges, social workers, other professionals and juvenile detention workers in helping detainees adjust to the facility and providing individual guidance.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school.
  • One (1) year of progressively responsible work experience that demonstrates the ability to follow instructions, learn and apply work procedures, work effectively with other people, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Experience and/or training which demonstrates the ability to lead, supervise, or instruct youths to insure a secure and safe environment.
  • A valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be of the same gender (male) as the client being served.
  • Must be willing and able to work weekends, nights, holidays, and rotating shifts.
  • Must be willing and able to work outside of normally scheduled work hours.
  • Must be willing and able to work weekends, nights, and holidays for intermittent (on call) positions.

Nice To Haves

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited university will be deemed to have met the General Experience.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited university with a major in social science, education, criminal justice, or other related field will be deemed to have met all of the requirements.
  • Education in a baccalaureate program from an accredited university with a major in social science, education, criminal justice, or other related field may be substituted for the General Experience and Special Requirement on the basis of 15 semester credits for six (6) months of work experience.
