About The Position

The Twin Falls County Juvenile Detention Center is accepting applications for the position of Juvenile Detention Officer to fill current vacancies and to establish an eligibility roster for future openings. This is a continuous recruitment position. The role involves general non-sworn officer duties to ensure the safety and security of the County juvenile detention facility. Principal duties are performed in a secure corrections facility under the supervision of the Shift Supervisor, with work subject to stringent state and County legal guidelines and potential personal danger.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Valid Idaho State Drivers License
  • Juvenile Detention POST certification
  • Have or be able to obtain UAP (Unlicensed Assistive Personnel) medical and AUF (Appropriate Use of Force) certifications
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation, including fingerprints, polygraph, and remain in good standing.
  • Knowledge of detention methods, procedures, practices, equipment, and objectives.
  • Knowledge of County procedures including booking, detention, handling and release of juvenile inmates.
  • Knowledge of detention procedures and practices, including inmate confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of Federal laws, statutes, and codes applicable to detention and the jail environment.
  • Knowledge of Idaho and County statutes, laws, codes, and regulations governing juvenile arrest and detention.
  • Knowledge of County and Department policies, procedures, and practices, including inmate restraint procedures.
  • Knowledge of operation of a personal computer and job-related software applications.
  • Knowledge of operation of standard office equipment.
  • Knowledge of specialized equipment used in booking and detention, including fingerprinting and photography equipment, emergency breathing and rescue equipment, two-way radios, security cameras, restraint equipment, stand-off equipment, and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of First Aid and CPR.
  • Knowledge of juvenile justice systems, processes, procedures, and objectives.
  • Knowledge of Juvenile Court practices and processes, legal terminology, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques, equipment, and standards of drug and alcohol testing.
  • Knowledge of file and information management methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and composition.
  • Knowledge of County policies regarding safe work practices.
  • Ability to perform the duties of Juvenile Detention Officer to federal, County, and state standards.
  • Ability to monitor inmates to ensure safety and security of inmates, staff, and facility.
  • Ability to operate specialized detention equipment and security systems.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, including a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to compile pertinent data and prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports.
  • Ability to maintain, interpret, and produce records, logs, documentation, and reports.
  • Ability to escort inmates to and from facilities, to and from court, and other appointments.
  • Ability to deal physically and/or verbally with uncooperative, distraught, and hostile inmates.
  • Ability to recognize unusual medical, physical, or mental conditions of prisoners.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors the activities of inmates to ensure the safety and security of the facility and adherence to standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Processes new inmates, including verifying charges, fingerprinting, photography, physical searches, drug/alcohol testing, document preparation, data entry, housing assignment, clothing issuance, and orientation.
  • Coordinates inmate scheduling for court appearances, evaluations, interviews, and other appointments.
  • Performs release duties, including checking court orders, records, and paperwork, logging release data, and following all release procedures and protocols.
  • Monitors and logs inmate incoming and outgoing mail, telephone calls, and visitation according to established protocols.
  • Maintains facility security by patrolling secure areas, performing physical searches of inmates and their rooms.
  • Monitors inmate behavior in various situations including housing, classroom, exercise, dining, and recreation areas.
  • Monitors and logs inmate activities and movements during education, recreation, mealtimes, showering, interactions, and calls.
  • Administers disciplinary actions and holds inmates accountable for their actions and behavior.
  • Performs observation checks on inmates in their cells at prescribed intervals, including those on special medical or suicide watch.
  • Performs census counts to determine facility population and ensure all inmates are accounted for.
  • Takes inventory of items and equipment at the beginning and end of each shift.
  • Performs interior and perimeter security checks, including the use of security cameras.
  • Transports and escorts inmates within the facility and to court hearings and other designated appearances.
  • Picks up, transports, and serves inmate meals.
  • Delivers inmate medications and supervises their administration.
  • Supervises inmate hygiene, including showers, clean clothing, laundry, and procedures to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
  • Determines if inmates are ill or injured and obtains medical assistance, including transportation for medical attention.
  • Participates in ongoing training, including emergency responses, drills, escapes, and inmate disturbances.
  • Performs all work duties in accordance with federal, state, County, and Department statutes, laws, ordinances, policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Responds to questions and comments from the public and officials courteously and promptly.
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with co-workers to maximize effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality.
  • Assists other department and County employees as needed.
  • Works non-traditional hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Is on call after regular work hours to respond to emergency situations.
  • Is on call 24/7 to respond to fill a shift as required.
  • May substitute for teachers in their absence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
