Under general supervision, performs supervision and administration of detention work of moderate difficulty in the Juvenile Detention facility. This role involves working diligently to build positive working relationships with the Detention Manager and staff to create a positive, caring, safe, and healthy learning environment for detained youth. The Senior Officer serves as an essential member of the Detention Leadership Team, responsible for implementing detention services that align with the Department's Mission and Model. They collaborate with the Detention Manager and other staff to implement, quality assure, and improve detention programs and activities. This position also involves working as part of a team with coworkers, parents, probation officers, service providers, and community connections to assist youths. The role includes monitoring and instructing staff on programs, ensuring Detention Officers follow through on the Department’s implementation of Youth’s Individualized Detention Plans, and serving as a faculty member of the Coconino County Juvenile Detention Training Academy, providing ongoing training to graduates. The Senior Officer assists the Detention Manager in hiring and selection processes, provides leadership, training, and supervision to Detention Living Unit staff and/or Control Room Staff, and conducts performance evaluations. They offer regular strength-based feedback and support staff development. This role requires a deep understanding of individual youth needs, challenges, and strengths to individualize services for the best possible outcomes. The Senior Officer works directly with staff as they work with detained youth and, as needed, directly with the most challenged youth. They ensure staff compliance with youth-specific services, interventions, policies, and procedures for suicide prevention and wellness restoration. The position also ensures staff compliance and fidelity to Detention Policies & Procedures and Programs, maintains the safety and security of the juvenile detention facility through inspections and checks, facilitates conflict resolution between staff, handles emergency or crisis situations, ensures completion of intake and release procedures, participates in youth grievance appeals, and updates records and writes reports. The role may involve appearing in court to report youth progress and ensuring timeliness and accuracy within the Juvenile On-Line Tracking System (JOLTS) Living Unit Post.
