About The Position

Reporting to Legal Services Manager, the Justice Navigator is responsible for supporting individuals as they navigate the complexities of the justice system. The Justice Navigator provides practical, non‑legal guidance, reduces barriers to access, and connects individuals to appropriate services so they can participate effectively in court processes. This role requires a compassionate, organized and resourceful individual who is committed to serving people with dignity and respect.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated understanding of legal and court systems, including familiarity with criminal, civil, and family circuit court processes, terminology, and legal aid services.
  • Knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of justice system stakeholders such as judges, Crown counsel, defense lawyers, probation officers, and others.
  • Awareness of community and social support services, including mental health, addictions, housing, income assistance, and legal aid resources.
  • Understanding of confidentiality, privacy, and ethical obligations related to handling sensitive and personal information.
  • Ability to advocate for clients and guide them through court processes, utilizing strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in case coordination, file management, and crisis intervention, with skill in trauma-informed practice and deescalation techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, navigate complex systems, and build rapport and trust with clients and stakeholders.
  • Ability to understand and respect different cultural perspectives, values and beliefs and interact with people in a way that is culturally appropriate and respectful.

Nice To Haves

  • Post‑secondary education in related fields (e.g. social services, community work, paralegal studies, etc.)
  • 1 or more years of related experience in social services, community outreach, court administration, victim support, or a related client‑facing role.
  • Experience and training in trauma informed practice.
  • Experience coordinating and collaborating with community stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, including demographics, values, culture and history is desirable.
  • Priority consideration will be given to beneficiaries of the Inuvialuit Final Agreement.

Responsibilities

  • Guide clients through the justice system by explaining court processes in plain language.
  • Connect clients to legal aid, support services, and facilitate meetings with legal counsel, ensuring ongoing follow-up and support.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential client files, case notes, and records of all interactions, referrals, and case activities.
  • Monitor and track court dates, deadlines, compliance requirements, and handle case administration from intake to closure.
  • Assess client needs and refer them to appropriate community resources, such as mental health, addictions, housing, income assistance, and legal aid.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with service providers for warm referrals and coordinated client support.
  • Collaborate with legal and community partners, participate in meetings and planning, and contribute to a positive, inclusive workplace culture.
  • Advocate for clients to ensure their voices are heard, identify systemic barriers, and support self-advocacy and understanding of legal processes.
  • Stay current on court procedures, community resources, and participate in ongoing professional development and training.
  • Adhere to organizational policies, complete required reporting and data entry, and seek supervision when handling complex or high-risk cases.
