The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s (DPH) Perinatal Innovation Unit (PIU) administers the African American Infant and Maternal Mortality Prevention Initiative (AAIMM) Doula Program and the DPSS Doula Program. These programs offer culturally responsive, community-based doula services to pregnant and postpartum individuals at higher risk for adverse birth outcomes. Doulas provide prenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum education, support, advocacy, and resource navigation to enhance maternal and infant health outcomes, reduce stress, and promote positive birth experiences. The AAIMM Doula Program specifically pairs Black pregnant individuals with culturally congruent doulas to address racial inequities, while the DPSS Doula Program serves eligible CalWORKs participants. These programs are funded through June 30, 2027, with a possibility of extension. Employment is provided by Heluna Health.
