Clifton is currently searching for a Junior or Intermediate Materials Technician to join our Saskatoon office. Responsible for performing a variety of routine materials testing duties, you will assist in the delivery of high-quality field and laboratory testing services. This role reports directly to the Regional Lab Manager as part of Clifton’s Materials Engineering Practice Group.

Requirements

  • High School diploma of equivalent.
  • Minimum of one to four (1-4) years of materials testing civil construction practices and relevant testing standards (CSA, ASTM, ACI).
  • Must have valid Class 5 Driver’s License and provide a clean Driver’s Abstract.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of products (Word and Excel).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, on site, outside and in remote locations for periods of time, tolerating variable weather conditions.
  • Willing to work overtime, including long hours, night shifts or weekends, for potentially extended periods of time.
  • Proficient at report writing, reviewing, and interpretation of results.
  • Provide reliable, value added service to our clients with continual improvement.
  • Contribute to a positive work environment, conducting oneself in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Must work well in fast-paced environment and under pressure.
  • Ability to assess and initiate tasks independently and coordinate with other members of the team as necessary.
  • Continued attention to safety and safe work practices, with a strong workplace safety orientation.

Nice To Haves

  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from a recognized college or university considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting field and lab testing and documentation for quality control and quality assurance purposes (primarily asphalt, concrete, and aggregates/soils), with an emphasis on learning the requirements of the project or job assigned and delivering these services accordingly.
  • Providing accurate, detailed, and timely sampling and submittal of detailed reports of all inspection and testing work completed.
  • Assisting lab manager and supervisors with coordination of staff and resources.
  • Training junior staff on all testing provided, with an attention to quality and efficiency.
  • Providing high quality service to all clients and stakeholders of the project.
  • Liaising with contractor’s and client representatives to provide reliable, value-added service.
  • Knowledge of CSA and ASTM testing methods and standards with a proven ability to handle non-conformance issues.
  • Physical requirements: frequently lifting and/or moving up to 50lbs, standing for extended periods of time, squatting, walking over rough terrain, and other repetitive movements.
