About The Position

If you’re motivated by high-impact work that directly supports the U.S. Navy, Serco is seeking a Junior Engineer to join a highly experienced team in Arlington, VA supporting the development, construction, and sustainment of U.S. Navy surface ship systems. In this role, you will provide supervised engineering, production, and testing support across hull, mechanical, electrical, and total ship systems, including ship surveillance, waterfront engineering, inspections, and construction oversight. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside Navy, shipyard, and industry partners to ensure ships are built and maintained to the highest technical and safety standards, directly contributing to fleet readiness and the safety of our Sailors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in naval architecture, ocean engineering, mechanical engineering, marine engineering, systems engineering (ABET-Accredited), or a related discipline.
  • Understanding of ship and ship system design principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with maritime HM&E systems and Naval construction process.
  • Applicant must be highly skilled in both oral and written communications and be capable of productive and efficient work with limited or no supervision.
  • Applicant must be proficient with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Candidate must have the ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET Security Clearance
  • Travel Requirement ~10%

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with applicable regulatory, commercial, and military standards and classification society rules desired.
  • Experience working with ship system performance assessment and prediction methods a plus.
  • Knowledge of DDG 51 acquisition program and processes a plus.
  • Experience working with Navy ship and ship system design principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with maritime fuel systems, Gas Turbine Propulsion, Gas Turbine Generators, Saltwater Cooling systems, damage control systems and auxiliary systems.
  • Former Navy gas turbine shipboard auxiliary or main propulsion experience a plus.
  • Experience working with applicable regulatory, commercial, and military standards and classification society rules desired.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision provide support to clients developing and maintaining U.S. Navy surface ships systems and associated subsystems.
  • Provide production and testing support including engineering support for hull, mechanical and electrical systems; total ship engineering; ship surveillance; and all types of waterfront engineering and inspections.
  • Review shipbuilder work packages, conduct photo documentation, develop databases allowing searches for key information in written correspondence.
  • Review drawings, Initial Change Proposals (ICP), Engineering Change Proposals (ECP), waterfront changes, work items, design reviews condition reports and trial cards.
  • Reviewing initial designs, developments, and analysis of new ships and/or ship systems.
  • Assist in the development of designs for current and conceptualized ships, systems, and equipment.
  • Evaluate designs for feasibility.
  • Reviewing ECP packages for completeness and provide recommendations.
  • Assessing compliance with Naval regulatory and design standards.
  • Interfacing with stakeholders and cross functional teams to ensure necessary resources are available for ship/system.
  • Participating in Gas Turbine design meetings.
  • Reviewing qualification test procedures and participating in qualification testing and trials.
  • Researching new technology and/or development tools to remain informed of current technology.
  • Maintaining communications with SUPSHIP, NAVAIR and other commands, including laboratories and support contractors, in resolving technical issues impacting (or have potential to impact) the design or performance of the ship class.
