About The Position

Superior Motion Control (SMC) is a precision machine shop and assembly operation based in Farmingdale, NY, supporting the U.S. Department of Defense and major prime contractors. This role is an internship leading to a full-time Mechanical Engineer position. Strong performers will convert to full-time at the end of the summer. Both the internship and the full-time role are based on-site. The intern will work alongside the lead engineer, tackling the volume of work, gaining exposure to DoD programs, and growing into design ownership.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Familiarity with CAD software.
  • Ability to work on-site in Long Island, NY.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with DoD contracts.
  • Knowledge of precision machining and assembly.

Responsibilities

  • Compile and refine vendor packages for DoD contracts, including drawings, models, specs, and certifications.
  • Update legacy drawing packages and CAD models to current standards.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, vendors, and the shop floor to ensure package accuracy and completeness.
  • Back up the lead engineer in design, testing, machining, and mechanical assembly.
  • Support new program proposals and design work.
  • Build and test production and prototype components in the shop.
  • Develop and maintain process documentation, work instructions, and engineering standards.
