Requirements

  • University Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Eligible for a Canadian security clearance.
  • Registered with Professional Engineering in Province of work and actively working towards obtaining a Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of experience (Co-Op or Industry acceptable).
  • Knowledge of surface ships.
  • Knowledge of submarines.
  • Knowledge of shipyard processes and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Support Marine Systems department in providing engineering services to internal and external customers.
  • Participate in technical work under the guidance of senior staff members.
  • Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Comply with relevant business and ethics codes of conduct.
  • Undertake engineering activities in a way that contributes to best practice under the guidance of senior staff members.
  • Work within the BMT Quality Management System (QMS) processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrate willingness and active adoption of coaching and mentoring provided by senior staff in developing technical competency within specific discipline.
  • Contributes to building a positive team culture through input, feedback and participation in team building and wellness activities.
  • Apply basic knowledge and understanding of Marine / Mechanical design on small simple platforms (tug, barge, ferry) to large complex ships (surface combatants, submarines, cargo and passenger vessels) in one or more areas: Component selection; Equipment arrangement; Propulsion and Auxiliary systems; Application of standards for pumps, valves, flanges, and piping; Heat/Cooling load calculations; and Metallurgical considerations.
  • As part of a team, contribute to working with Shipyards, Dockyards, Owners, Class and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) to conduct ship surveys for design and engineering changes, mid-life upgrades and vessel condition documentation.
  • Support the development of feasibility studies, concept designs, installation design and integration of new and replacement equipment, including communicating design outputs using 2D drawings or 3D models.
  • Gain familiarization of domain specific standards including International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, Class Society rules, Transport Canada Regulations and Canadian Forces Technical Orders.
