About The Position

The purpose of the Junior Language Researcher and Instructor position is to support the preservation and revitalization of the xa'isla language by assisting in research, documentation, and teaching. This position is designated to help the incumbent build their knowledge of the x̄á’isla language and orthography while developing skills in language instruction and resource creation. Working closely with fluent speakers, linguists, and senior staff, the Junior Language Researcher & Instructor will contribute to creating teaching materials and supporting others on their language learning journey.

Requirements

  • Experience or some knowledge with the x̄á’isla language and orthography (or willingness to learn).
  • Ability to problem-solve and use critical-thinking skills, with the ability to handle complex and emotionally challenging situations.
  • Ability to respond to a dynamic environment with flexibility, sensitivity, compassionate and empathy.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point) and Outlook/email.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent is an asset.
  • A combination of relevant education and/or experience may also be deemed acceptable.
  • Experience with archiving and recording equipment is an asset.
  • Experience in teaching, tutoring, or language learning is an asset.
  • Strong interest in x̄á’isla language revitalization and cultural preservation.
  • Knowledge of First Nations Culture and working in a First Nation’s community is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Actively learn and practice the x̄á’isla language and orthography under the guidance of fluent speakers and senior language staff.
  • Assist in researching, documenting, and preserving the x̄á’isla language.
  • Support the development of translations, interpretations, and analyses of language materials.
  • Collaborating with fluent speakers and other linguists and discovering and documenting the origins of words and the authenticity of texts.
  • Updating and maintaining the xa'aisla dictionary (physical and digital).
  • Regularly update xa'isla resources and documents.
  • Assist with developing xa'isla language curriculum and lesson plans for community use.
  • Assist with developing teaching tools, resources, and simple lesson plans.
  • Assist or Co-facilitate language classes, workshops, and activities.
  • Assist with archiving and maintaining xa'isla archives and documents that pertain to language and culture.
  • Participate in training, mentorship, and support community members in their language journeys.
