Junior Engineering Technician

About The Position

Position Purpose: Performs professional, technical, and all other work related to engineering and construction activities within the Commission; monitors construction site data, records plots, tracks payments and claims, and manages inventory; ensures quality standards and inspections and is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree in related field is preferred.
  • Two (2) years of experience with municipal infrastructure projects or construction sites; experience with construction of water, sewer, and drains systems required; Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must possess a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.
  • General knowledge of civil engineering and engineering survey and design; working knowledge of MS Office applications; working knowledge of local and state regulations.
  • Ability to compile comprehensive reports and the practical application of findings; assess conditions in a variety of locations and determine proper course of action; deal effectively and diplomatically with the public, consultants, officials, department heads and other constituencies; read site plans.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills; proficient computer skills including MS Office applications and specialized software; skills in operating the above listed tools and equipment.
  • Employees must be Boston residents on their date of hire and for the duration of their employment subject to BWSC policies and collective bargaining agreements.

Responsibilities

  • Records, plots and produces field construction data from Construction Inspector’s daily reports.
  • Maintains manual and electronic databases and files.
  • Assists in the preparation of final quantities.
  • Performs computations and analysis of change orders and contractor claims.
  • Assists in the review of as-built plans progress and performs quality control.
  • Assists with total station surveys and level runs of new facilities.
  • Assists in the preparation of special reports as deemed necessary.
  • Assists in the preparation of permit applications.
  • Reads and interprets construction drawings, blueprints and site plans.
  • Responds to various requests for information.
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
