About The Position

The Cyber Defense Research Intern will support the Naval Information Warfare Centers (NIWC) Pacific and Atlantic, the University of Hawaii, and Department of Defense partners through applied research and technical projects that contribute to national security initiatives. This internship provides students with the opportunity to collaborate with university faculty, government representatives, and industry professionals while gaining hands-on experience in cyber research, engineering, information technology, networking, and other mission-focused disciplines. The role is designed to develop the next generation of cyber professionals through meaningful research and real-world problem solving.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in a University of Hawaii undergraduate or graduate program.
  • Pursuing a degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

Nice To Haves

  • Interest in cybersecurity, defense technologies, or Department of Defense research.
  • Experience with research projects, programming, networking, or systems administration.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity principles, software development, or engineering concepts.
  • Previous experience working in a collaborative research or laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrated interest in supporting national security or defense-related initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in individual or team-based applied research projects supporting Department of Defense and Navy initiatives.
  • Conduct research related to cybersecurity, engineering, information technology, networking, business initiatives, or other technical focus areas.
  • Collaborate with University of Hawaii faculty, NIWC personnel, and industry partners to support research objectives.
  • Analyze technical information and document research findings, recommendations, and project outcomes.
  • Present research progress and results to faculty, government representatives, and project stakeholders as required.
  • Support activities within the Cyber Defense Research Laboratory.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and comply with established research and security requirements.
  • Contribute innovative ideas and technical solutions that support program objectives.
  • This position is designed to be flexible, with responsibilities evolving to meet business needs and enable individual growth.
