About The Position

LBYD Federal is seeking a Junior Biocontainment Safety Engineer to provide engineering support for the operation and verification of high and maximum containment laboratories. This role involves reviewing design submissions, ensuring safety compliance with relevant manuals, validating reports, and assisting with training and policy reviews. The position requires close collaboration with senior engineers and federal stakeholders, with opportunities for increased independence as experience is gained. The engineer will support plan reviews related to safety and health issues in biomedical research facilities and ensure compliance with guidelines for various systems and equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Science.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience.
  • Must understand design and construction processes.
  • Must read and interpret design and construction drawings and specifications.
  • Must possess technical and theoretical knowledge of general engineering principles.
  • Ability to Obtain Government Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Performs functional duties under the oversight of a senior engineer.
  • Review design submissions for laboratory or hospital-related facility renovations and new construction.
  • Work with facility engineers, project officers, and architectural/engineer design firms to ensure safety compliance with the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) and Design Requirements Manual (DRM).
  • Perform design consultation, variance request review, and safety issue resolution.
  • Validate air balance reports to ensure proper airflow dynamics.
  • Validate facility system controls and other safety and health related monitoring efforts.
  • Assist with high (BSL-3) and maximum (BSL-4) containment lab verification testing and pressure decay testing in the field on an as-needed basis.
  • Assist with training of Office of Research Facilities (ORF) and Office of Research Services (ORS) staff on laboratory safety and biocontainment engineering practices.
  • Assist with code and policy reviews of current practices to align NIH standards with good industry practices.
  • Support the DOHS and ORF in the conduct of plan review related to identifying safety and health issues that may arise due to the construction and/or renovation of biomedical research facilities.
  • Review design/construction plans and specifications to ensure compliance with all applicable guidelines, standards, or requirements for HVAC systems, electrical and plumbing systems, laboratory layouts and finishes, primary containment devices, emergency safety fixtures, and chemical storage.
