About The Position

The Ministry of Alberta Justice helps ensure that all Albertans can live in safe and resilient communities while having access to a fair and innovative justice system. Working alongside its partners in law enforcement, family justice, health, the judiciary, criminal justice system and other stakeholders, the ministry has a direct or shared responsibility in all elements of the justice system in Alberta. The Alberta Court of Justice will recognize the importance of working collaboratively with First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities, and have a working knowledge around the Truth and Reconciliation Commission calls to action. They also understand the importance of child and family involvement, connection, and collaboration to a large array of other cultures and communities. This role provides executive and legal support to justices in Grande Prairie. The Alberta Court of Justice has an exciting opportunity to provide executive and legal support to justices in Grande Prairie. As a Paralegal, working in a team environment as well as independently, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive administrative and legal support for up to five Justices of the Alberta Court of Justice.

Requirements

  • A two-year diploma in a related field (e.g., Legal Assistant, Legal Administration, and Paralegal) supplemented with at least two year progressively responsible related experience.
  • Equivalencies will be considered on the basis of one year of education for one year of related legal experience or one year of legal experience for one year of related education.
  • Lifting/moving up to 25 pounds
  • This position involves bending, walking or using the elevator to access different floors within the courthouse, and pushing or pulling a cart for file movement between floors.
  • Typing speed of at least 50 WPM desired.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as a Judicial Assistant/Paralegal/ Executive Assistant
  • A Legal Assistant Diploma
  • Previous experience working in an office setup supporting multiple lawyers
  • Experience working in a Court environment, preferably with the Court of Justice
  • Experience working in M365 environment.

Responsibilities

  • managing calendars and scheduling appointments
  • documenting and processing budgetary/claim expenses
  • typing, formatting, editing and proofreading judgments, including researching and verifying case and statute citations, to ensure accuracy of the finished product prior to filing
  • researching and preparing correspondence and memoranda of a highly complex and confidential nature
  • preparing material for court hearings
  • handling sensitive and confidential information
  • establishing and maintaining hard-copy and electronic filing systems including organizing and classifying records
  • handling incoming telephone inquiries and mail
  • coordinating travel arrangements often of a complex nature
  • coordinating meetings and conferences, which includes organizing and assembling all documents required
  • scheduling judicial assignments
  • performing backup duties for other Paralegals
  • performing other related administrative tasks as requested
