About The Position

The San Diego Unified School District is seeking a JROTC Army Instructor to be assigned to Mira Mesa High School. This role involves instructing cadets and managing the JROTC unit in accordance with military regulations and district policies. The instructor will work under the direction of the Senior Army Instructor and is expected to contribute to the overall educational mission of the district, which emphasizes respect for diversity and equitable opportunities for all students.

Requirements

  • Must be certified by the United States Army Cadet Command Headquarters.
  • Meet eligibility requirements established by the sponsor military service.
  • Must be a retired, current serving reservist or army veteran Non-commissioned Officer E6-E9 or warrant officer with no less than 8 years of service.
  • Achieve a passing score on the CBEST and PE CSET exams within 4 years (with a waiver to four years with satisfactory progress).
  • Ability to obtain ROTC credential via the specified pathway.
  • Valid California Teaching Credential required.
  • Must answer all position-specific questions thoroughly, clearly, and concisely.
  • Provide a complete list of every school district, county office of education, charter school, other educational institutions, or state special school where you have been employed, regardless of length of service.
  • Provide the email address for each employer's Human Resources or Personnel Office.
  • Provide contact information for three references (current or previous supervisor).
  • Attach JROTC qualification memo/letter.
  • Attach Cover Letter.
  • Attach a copy of your valid California Credential, or equivalent out-of-state credential.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a yearly schedule for HSROTC objectives and activities, involving cadets in the planning phase.
  • Perform administrative tasks, including maintaining electronic student records and providing required reports.
  • Carry out logistics tasks, such as preparing requisitions and managing federal supply operations.
  • Enroll and retain new students, preparing them for career or college and ensuring high school graduation.
  • Visit feeder schools at least once a year.
  • Teach HSROTC Cadets, achieving curricular requirements and learning standards.
  • Continuously improve instruction by staying abreast of new instructional and motivational techniques.
  • Counsel and mentor students on their academic performance and as members of the Corps of Cadets.
  • Assist students in applying for scholarships and completing service academy applications.
  • Accomplish all required school tasks, including participating in staff meetings, school committees, and student activities.
  • Perform duties required of other teachers in the school.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct hands-on training such as color guard, drill teams, and social activities.
  • Conduct risk assessments for all activities and enforce safety guidelines.
  • Develop professional qualifications by participating in conferences and professional development.
  • Meet continuing education requirements.
  • Prepare the unit for official visits and accreditation.
  • Set an outstanding personal example of professional behavior, social conduct, and appearance.
