About The Position

deciBel Research is seeking a junior level System Engineer to develop infrared (IR) hardbody missile threat models for the Missile Defense Agency's (MDA's) Threat Modeling Center (TMC) at Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado Springs. This role involves gaining experience with threat model phenomenology, IR signatures, predictions, and simulation models. The engineer will work with a team to ensure data production needs for MDA Ground Test Modeling and Simulation are met, collaborating with Software Engineers for tool support and with internal and external stakeholders for model development and updates. A key aspect of the role is understanding stakeholder requirements and ensuring a vigilant Verification and Validation (V&V) process for deliverables. The position also focuses on improving automation and tools for efficiency and meeting leadership objectives, all while working on a defined schedule to support MDA Ground Test Modeling and Simulation events.

Requirements

  • Experience with technical analysis of modeling and simulation of data sets
  • Familiarity with the flight characteristics, motion, and performance of missile systems
  • Familiarity with hard body heating of objects and their corresponding signature representation
  • Experience with Verification and Validation (V&V) of modeling and simulation (M&S) of signatures data
  • Experience with scripting/automation languages, such as Python, Bash, or MATLAB
  • Must have a good understanding of modeling and simulation methods and processes
  • Must be familiar with infrared signature concepts and physics behind hard body heating and how they affect infrared intensities
  • Must be result-focused, work well within a dynamic team environment, be self-motivated, and be able to produce reliable products and documentation within established deadlines
  • Applicant selected must have an active Secret security clearance
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

Nice To Haves

  • Strong math, physics, and/or engineering background is preferred
  • Previous experience with analyzing flight characteristics, motion, atmospheric dynamics, and missile performance parameters of ballistic missiles is highly desirable
  • Strong background in missile system engineering performance
  • Mastery of engineering modeling principles behind body motion, trajectory analysis, counter measures, debris, and signature modeling is a plus
  • Background in IR Signatures modeling
  • Familiarity with Optical Signatures Code (OSC)
  • Experience in Agile software development methodologies, including Scrum, Kanban, and Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)

Responsibilities

  • Gain experience with threat model phenomenology with focus on IR signatures
  • Gain experience with IR signature predictions and simulation models
  • Work with the team to ensure completion of data production needs in support of MDA Ground Test Modeling and Simulation
  • Work in close coordination with TSE's Software Engineers for support to ensure the timely provision of tools needed in ITP production
  • Work in close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders in the development of IRHB models for new systems and updates to existing missile systems
  • Gain experience in understanding stakeholders' requirements and work with the team to ensure vigilant Verification and Validation (V&V) process of deliverables
  • Work with the team to ensure automation and tools improvement are rightfully coordinated – aiming to attain utmost efficiency and meet Leadership objectives
  • Work on defined schedule to timely support MDA Ground Test Modeling and Simulation events
