About The Position

The Junior Mortgage Loan Originator (Junior MLO) supports the mortgage lending team by assisting in the origination of residential real estate loans, including conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, home equity loans, HELOCs, and land loans. This developmental role is designed to provide hands on training through shadowing, mentoring, and supervised loan production while learning credit union products, mortgage regulations, sales techniques, and member service standards. The Junior MLO gradually assumes increased responsibility as knowledge, licensing, and performance benchmarks are achieved.

Requirements

  • 0–2 years of experience in mortgage lending, consumer lending, financial services, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in mortgage sales, member service, and relationship development.
  • Basic understanding (or ability to learn) mortgage products, documentation, and underwriting concepts.
  • NMLS registration required or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to learn sales techniques, needs based conversations, and consultative lending.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and internal loan origination systems (or ability to learn).
  • Willingness to travel locally to branches, member meetings, work in person every day, and training events as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Support senior Mortgage Loan Originators (MLOs) and/or the Mortgage Production Manager throughout the mortgage process, from initial member contact through closing.
  • Conduct member loan interviews under supervision to identify financial needs and recommend appropriate mortgage products and alternatives.
  • Assist with the origination of a full suite of mortgage and real estate secured products, including: Conventional first mortgage loans, FHA, VA, and USDA loans, Home equity loans and HELOCs, Land loans.
  • Prepare and submit loan applications, run findings through mortgage software, and assist in document collection and follow up.
  • Learn to issue pre approvals and conditional approvals under oversight.
  • Assist with ordering and tracking appraisals, title work, and other third party services.
  • Work collaboratively with processors, underwriters, vendors, and branches to ensure timely and compliant loan processing.
  • Maintain a personal pipeline with production expectations while assisting with senior MLO pipelines.
  • Support branch referral efforts by building relationships with branch staff and Member Experience teams.
  • Participate in outside business development activities such as seminars, workshops, and referral network development.
  • Participate in pipeline meetings, training sessions, and recurring coaching meetings.
  • Learn and apply all applicable regulatory requirements, including RESPA, TILA/Reg Z, HMDA, ECOA, investor guidelines, and credit union lending policies.
  • Maintain accurate loan files and ensure required disclosures are issued in compliance with regulatory timeframes.
  • Provide excellent internal and external member service with professionalism, confidentiality, diplomacy, and tact.
  • Participate in ongoing training and education to build product knowledge, sales skills, and regulatory competency.
  • Obtain and maintain NMLS registration in compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
