About The Position

The Oklahoma Workforce Commission seeks a highly analytical and mission-driven Data Scientist to join our team. The successful candidate will be a key player in a high-impact, statewide initiative to build a predictive workforce intelligence system. This individual will be responsible for acquiring, analyzing, and visualizing complex datasets to identify early-warning signs of economic disruptions and layoffs. This work will directly inform state policy, support at-risk industries, and power a public-facing dashboard. This is a unique opportunity to use data science to make a tangible impact on Oklahoma's workforce and economy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Public Policy, or a related quantitative field.
  • 2+ years of professional experience in data analysis, statistical modeling, and data visualization.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL for data extraction and manipulation.
  • Advanced skills in a programming language (e.g., Python, JavaScript), including proficiency with core data science libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn).
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining dashboards using BI tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, or similar).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to facilitate meetings and communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, driving collaborative efforts and ensuring alignment on agency initiatives.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
  • Experience in project management or program administration related to workforce initiatives or similar fields.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in a relevant quantitative field.
  • Experience working with economic, labor market (LMI), or workforce data.
  • Experience with predictive analytics, machine learning, and time-series forecasting.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire, clean, and analyze predictive business activity data from various private and public data sources.
  • Develop and implement statistical models to identify and predict at-risk companies, sectors, and regions.
  • Design and build data visualizations that provide real-time, actionable insights for policymakers, employers, and the public.
  • Ensure data is presented in a transparent, accessible, and easily understandable format.
  • Conduct evaluation and feasibility studies to identify statewide workforce gaps, emerging industry needs, and strategies for supporting at-risk populations.
  • Communicate complex data findings clearly to non-technical stakeholders, including agency leadership, legislators, and the public.
  • Facilitate and coordinate meetings with multiple stakeholders to discuss findings, gather insights, and push forward agency initiatives. Document discussions and action items effectively, ensuring clear follow-up and communication.
