Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited apprenticeship or formal training program in bookbinding.
  • Demonstrated experience in traditional and modern bookbinding techniques.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools and machinery specific to bookbinding.
  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications related to bookbinding.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with book conservation and restoration practices.
  • Knowledge of archival standards and materials.
  • Familiarity with digital printing and binding technologies.
  • Certification from a recognized bookbinding or conservation organization.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of bookbinding tasks including folding, sewing, gluing, trimming, and casing-in to assemble books.
  • Repair and restore damaged or worn books using appropriate conservation techniques to extend their lifespan.
  • Select and prepare materials such as leather, cloth, paper, and adhesives to meet project specifications.
  • Operate and maintain specialized bookbinding machinery and hand tools safely and efficiently.
  • Collaborate with clients and team members to understand project requirements and deliver high-quality finished products on schedule.
