About The Position

The Journeyperson Welder performs skilled welding and metal fabrication work in accordance with technical drawings, specifications and applicable standards. This role is responsible for fabricating custom prototypes, production parts, jigs, fixtures and metal structures to meet customer and quality requirements within a fast‑paced production environment. The Journeyperson Welder works collaboratively with Supervisors and Lead Hands to support continuous improvement initiatives, achieve production targets and ensure welding is completed to established parameters using GMAW, FCAW and GTAW processes.

Requirements

  • Sound knowledge of welding theory, metallurgy and the effects of heat on various base and filler materials used in manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply welding symbols, blueprints, shop drawings and welding procedure specifications (WPS).
  • Strong understanding of dimensional tolerances, fit‑up requirements and production quality standards.
  • Ability to perform visual inspections of welds and fabricated components, identifying defects, non‑conformances and quality issues.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to safely set up, adjust and troubleshoot welding and fabrication equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure production environment while effectively managing multiple competing priorities.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Alberta Journeyperson Welder Certificate.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain applicable Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) certifications, including CSA W47.1 and/or W47.2.
  • Demonstrated experience working within standardized manufacturing processes, quality control systems and production workflows.
  • Experience performing routine preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting of welding and fabrication equipment.
  • Proven experience reading and interpreting blueprints, shop drawings and welding procedure specifications (WPS).

Nice To Haves

  • Red Seal endorsement is considered an asset.
  • Current or previous certification in GMAW, FCAW and SMAW processes in all positions is considered an asset, with certification maintained as operationally required.
  • Valid welding certification, Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), 47.1 flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), certified in all positions, as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Read, interpret and apply engineering drawings, blueprints, welding symbols and welding procedure specifications to ensure components are manufactured as designed and suitable for their intended application.
  • Set up and operate manual and semi‑automatic welding equipment to join metal components using GTAW, GMAW, FCAW and SMAW processes in accordance with approved procedures and quality standards.
  • Perform flame‑cutting and thermal cutting operations using manual or semi‑automatic equipment as required.
  • Operate metal fabrication and forming equipment, including brakes, shears and straightening and bending machines.
  • Repair, rebuild and modify metal components by welding additional material or reinforcing existing structures.
  • Complete inspections, repairs, alterations and retrofit work to ensure structural integrity and compliance with specifications.
  • Monitor materials and parts usage and report shortages, defects or quality concerns.
  • Ensure assigned tasks and projects are completed accurately, efficiently and within established timelines.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records and documentation.
  • Maintain current knowledge of welding technologies, codes, compliance requirements and industry best practices.
  • Train, direct and support junior employees and apprentices and inspect and certify work quality as required.
  • Participate and adhere to shop hygiene, housekeeping and 5S Program.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with Silent-Aire safety program standards and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations and Code.
  • Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary.
