About The Position

The position of Journeyman Boilermaker or Technician performs their duties while supporting California Boiler’s mission, vision, and values. This is an advanced position, with the assumption that the employee has all of the basic required skills to operate independently in conducting his or her day-to-day assignments relevant to the trade. The employee will be classified as a Journeyman with all of the subsequent responsibilities, completed in-class and in-field apprenticeship hours, and expectations of competencies having been already acquired and available to our organization as part of performing your daily assignments. The job roles assigned to this position consist of conducting field assigned tasks for California Boiler to include assessments, troubleshooting, repairs, and installations while playing the role of a competent job-lead with the ability to train apprentices for your trade. The character qualities that must resonate are: teachability, accountability, timeliness, and the maintenance of effective communication skills. In performing your craft-trade as an employee of California Boiler you will engage in every variety of other industry-related tasks required to safely and efficiently complete jobs. It is our expectation that in this role you will be able to operate independently in the field, as well as operate as a trainer of others. This includes handling yourself in a safe and professional manner. Safety is our number one priority, with customer care running a close second. Speaking with the customers and coordinating with the shop the needs, limitations and expectations of the customer is critical. This position will give direction to apprentices and mechanical helpers when they are working with you on the job. It is our expectation that you will strive to help them to become a journeyman for their trade. Journeymen should understand how to operate all trade required hand tools and power tools safely and correctly. At all times, Safety is our number one priority and should be in the forefront of our minds. Journeymen should be able to retain information in a way that allows them to provide tasks to apprentices and have them repeat the task to assure effective communication and learning is taking place. It is expected that you will perform lay-out, pipe fabrication, installations, and inspections with little or no supervision. Understanding that we work on a wide variety of equipment and learning how to diagnose issues is key to our operation. Performing installations of equipment for a variety of pressure vessel and thermal transfer systems related to our industry. This includes system installation, as well as knowing how many diverse types of equipment are supposed to be installed. This includes, but is not limited to, complete boilers, DA tanks, condensate tank, pumps, burners, gas regulators, steam headers, traps, etc. and all associated piping to connect these items into the system. Use and continually grow a detailed understanding of boiler controls, including but not limited to, operating control, high limit, low water, gas pressure switches, combustion air switch, etc. This includes the ability to correctly perform a trip test on the boiler controls. Demonstrate a year-on-year development in mastery of various vessels, systems, heat medium transfer equipment and systems, and oil, gas, fluid, vapor transfer systems parameters, troubleshooting and design. Fill out work orders and timesheets in a way that communicates with not only the customer, but the shop personnel so the customer’s needs are met. (This includes the completion of paperwork in a timely manner and submitted on time when required). California Boiler supplies a truck with tools for those employees who demonstrate skill sets that give them the ability to negotiate job tasks independently in a consistent fashion. With a truck and tools, it is the expectation of this Organization that the truck is kept well stocked with parts and tools. The truck is the responsibility of the Journeyman to maintain and supply. Inventory on the truck shall be maintained by the mechanic. Work as a team player with the other Journeymen and Apprentices as work and scheduling conflicts come up with after-hours work. It is expected and understood that there will be times when field employees must be willing to take service calls and scheduled work outside normal business hours.

Requirements

  • Mastery level of knowledge in heat transfer systems and mechanical installations.
  • Mastery in the ability to read and understand a variety of piping diagrams, including symbols and their meanings.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Customer service understanding.
  • Team leadership skills.
  • Project management skills.
  • Competency to perform as a job-lead for a minimum of five men.
  • A keen understanding that this job requires us to have a solution at all times, and a commitment to providing the solution.
  • Multiple certifications in welding skills (stick/arc/wire welding).
  • Welding skills of different varieties (heliarc, mig and tig, wire feed, stainless steel, etc.).
  • Ability and certification to read and write standard WPS for various procedures common to our industry.
  • Mastery in mechanical skills, including pipe fitting, welding, rigging, layout, job coordination.
  • Mastery in common pressure vessel repair, installation, and inspections.
  • Mastery of common pressure vessel tube and tube sheet tear-down, rebuild, and erection.
  • Mastery of boiler/burner system designs, auxiliaries, steam and condensate systems, DA systems, pumps, and other equipment associated with the production of steam, hot water, and thermal fluids delivery systems.
  • Practiced and proven ability to lead crews of a minimum of five men in conducting mechanical projects.
  • Mastery of blue-print reading, mechanical room layout, boiler, and pressure vessel systems design, troubleshooting and repair.
  • Mastery in layout, troubleshooting and repair of valving, valving systems, trapping, pumping systems, fuel delivery systems, DA and other condensate delivery systems, and boiler auxiliaries.
  • Basic electrical knowledge: ability to mark and disconnect wire, reconnect such wiring and perform basic boiler auxiliary troubleshooting.
  • Ability to use an electrical multimeter to test for live circuits.
  • Mastery of electrical AC and DC circuits, theory, and explanation.
  • Mastery in installations, repair and troubleshooting of electrical conduit, panels, and wiring installations for High, Low and DC voltage systems.
  • Mastery in VFD troubleshooting, single-loop and multi-loop controllers, transmitter calibration troubleshooting and installation, pumps and pumping systems, boiler auxiliaries.
  • Competencies in reading, drawing, and designing electrical diagrams and prints.
  • Mastery of all major combustion principles, performing combustion tuning, performance assessments, Ultra-Lo-Nox, and Lo-Nox applications, as well as application troubleshooting.
  • Strong competency in performing instrument and electrical troubleshooting and systems diagnosis.
  • Mastery of all major fuel delivery systems, including fuel oil, natural gas, propane, and gaseous biofuels, including all relevant NFPA-54, 85 and 86 codes impacting required interlocking and site-specific safety measures for combustion systems.
  • Mastery in knowledge of various thermal systems, applications, installations, relevant codes pertaining to particular sites and settings, and their associated equipment.
  • Must be capable of working in physically difficult, hot, strenuous environments under the pressures of job-timeline and customer needs for, at times, extended periods.
  • Must be able to work in confined space/areas.
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application information.
  • The employee is frequently required to walk, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.

  • Employee must engage in a skills-assessment within the first three (3) months of hiring on to determine current capabilities and allow for the setting of benchmarks for future growth.
