About The Position

GovCIO is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Journeyman Linux Systems Engineer to support critical infrastructure modernization, continuous integration, and platform engineering initiatives for the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). This technical role focuses on designing, authoring automated infrastructure, optimizing virtualization layers, and engineering secure, high-availability Linux enterprise platforms. This position will be located in Kearneysville, WV, and will be a hybrid position.

Requirements

  • High School with 6 - 9 years (or commensurate experience)
  • DoD 8570 IAT Level II or higher (e.g., Security+ CE, CySA+) and a recognized Linux certification (e.g., RHCE, RHCSA).
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience as a Linux Systems Engineer managing Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) operational environments.
  • Deep technical proficiency in VMware vSphere (ESXi/vCenter) architecture, virtualization tuning, and cluster management.
  • Advanced, hands-on software development engineering experience writing, refactoring, and maintaining complex Ansible playbooks from scratch.
  • Proven experience translating DISA STIG requirements into automated baseline configurations and engineered security controls.
  • High proficiency writing complex programmatic scripts in Bash and Python to build automated tools and streamline enterprise operations.
  • Practical, working engineering knowledge of container environments like OpenShift, Docker, or Kubernetes, including integrating REST APIs into workflows.
  • Must have an active Secret clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Prior engineering experience supporting U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) or Department of Homeland Security (DHS) software modernization programs.
  • Direct experience writing custom script policies and tracking metrics within BMC True Sight Server Automation (TSSA).
  • Professional designations such as Red Hat Certified System Engineer (RHCE) or VMware Certified Professional (VCP).
  • Practical understanding of cloud architecture patterns and infrastructure-as-code deployment within AWS or Azure.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer, design, and optimize Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) deployment methodologies across complex, virtual and physical enterprise topologies.
  • Manage and architect VMware vSphere infrastructure, performing deep-dive performance tuning, hypervisor engineering, clustering, and advanced virtual host troubleshooting.
  • Develop, author, and maintain complex Ansible playbooks from scratch to automate multi-tier system configurations, application deployments, and orchestration layers.
  • Engineer automated scripts and jobs within BMC True Sight Server Automation (TSSA) to institutionalize automated configuration tracking against government baselines (e.g., DISA STIGs).
  • Architect and implement robust security controls, pioneering proactive vulnerability remediation strategies to ensure institutional federal compliance.
  • Perform deep-dive root-cause analysis on complex hardware, software, and networking anomalies to permanently prevent system defect recurrences.
  • Integrate containerization technologies into traditional Linux infrastructure workflows to support agency software modernization milestones.
  • Create comprehensive engineering documentation, including high-level design diagrams, baseline configuration blueprints, and systems engineering guides.
