About The Position

Under direct supervision of the Electric Foreman and the general supervision of the Electric Operations Manager, the Journeyman Lineman constructs, operates, and maintains the electric power systems within the District. This role involves constructing and maintaining primary and secondary overhead and underground electrical systems, installing poles, transformers, capacitors, reclosers, switches, and other electrical equipment. The Journeyman Lineman will also perform switching and operations for electrical line equipment, install electric service lines and metering, and take voltage and current readings. The position requires the use of live line tools and rubber gloves, driving and operating various utility vehicles and equipment, and responding to emergency power outages, including after-hour calls and participating in an on-call rotation. Additionally, the role involves assisting in on-the-job training, ensuring timely and cost-efficient completion of tasks, building positive working relationships, and using computer systems for mapping and work orders. The Journeyman Lineman is expected to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the District's Core Values.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma
  • Successful completion of Electrical Lineman Apprenticeship program.
  • Thorough knowledge of power systems facilities, including substations, switchgear, protective devices, and primary and secondary electrical distribution equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of power system operations, maintenance, and construction standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of the use and care of hand tools, power tools, heave equipment, and materials used in electric system operations, maintenance and construction.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints and construction documents.
  • Knowledge of safety standards; General Orders 95 and 128, 165, 174 and Title 8 of the Electrical Safety Orders.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with customers and other co-workers with clarity and tact.
  • Ability to handle tense situations in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Possession of basic computer skills with ability to operate a computer, smartphone and tablet.
  • Must have a valid Class A CDL driver's license; must meet the requirements of DOT certification.
  • Must be certified in CPR & First Aid.
  • Ability to climb power poles and structures without the aid of man-lift equipment.
  • Ability to perform pole top, vault, and bucket rescue within OSHA standards, annually to maintain current certification.
  • Must comply with the District's residency requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Constructs and maintains primary and secondary overhead and underground electrical systems.
  • Installs poles, transformers, capacitors, reclosers, switches, and other electrical equipment and hardware for overhead and underground electrical systems.
  • Performs switching and operations for electrical line equipment for construction.
  • Installs electric service lines and metering on customer facilities.
  • Takes voltage and current readings utilizing ammeters, voltmeters, rotation meters, power logger, and other related test equipment.
  • Utilizes live line tools and rubber gloves as the project may require.
  • Drives and operates vehicles and equipment related to the electric industry, including Digger-derricks, aerial man-lifts, bucket truck, dump trucks, flatbed trucks, hydro excavators, and tensioners.
  • Responds to emergency call to restore power outages and problems, including after-hour calls.
  • Participates in the Electric Department on-call rotation for standby duty.
  • Assists in on-the-job training as necessary.
  • Responsible for the timely and cost-efficient completion of repairs and tasks assigned.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with direct co-workers, all fellow District employees and the public by using principles of good communication and customer service.
  • Use computers, smartphones, and/or tablets to access GIS mapping, Tunet, Email and work order systems.
