Job Summary • Ensure that production and plant equipment is maintained as required by procedure, internal practices and standards • Participate in preventive maintenance, machine modification, and installation of equipment as required • Ensure that production and plant equipment is properly locked out and tagged out. • To ensure his/her own as well as co-workers’ health and safety it is the responsibility that housekeeping procedures are followed, that the work area is clean and clear from obstructions and that all situations which could potentially result in an accident are immediately pointed out to the Supervisor. • Wear protective equipment and clothing as determined by company procedures and as posted.

Requirements

  • Good English language skills - written and oral
  • Ability to communicate with all departments and all levels of the organization
  • WHMIS trained, including knowledge of fire prevention.
  • General knowledge of environment, health and safety regulations for the workplace.
  • Knowledge of static prevention.
  • Knowledge of all emergency exits.
  • Knowledge of all applicable safety procedures and where to find them.
  • Knowledge of how to access MSD sheets.
  • Ability to use metal lathe and milling machinery.
  • Product knowledge
  • Ability to understand and trouble shoot ladder logic and PLC’s by monitoring inputs and outputs, as well as connecting a computer to a PLC for on line trouble shooting.
  • Sufficient knowledge of PLC’s to make minor program changes
  • Ability to fabricate parts as required.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, schematics and electrical code specifications to determine layout of industrial electrical equipment installations
  • Install, examine, replace or repair electrical wiring, receptacles, switch boxes, conduits, feeders, fiber-optic and coaxial cable assemblies, lighting fixtures and other electrical components
  • Ability to overhaul equipment and specify parts required.
  • Ability to work independently, without much direct supervision.
  • Ability to find and diagnose problems with equipment and decide on a correct course of action without direct supervision.
  • While supervision is not a direct function of this position, the ability to work with the Shift Leader and provide leadership on the off shifts is a key consideration.
  • People skills are essential to enlisting the aid of others.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain all equipment on a regular basis to ensure safe and efficient operating conditions.
  • Report usage of all spare parts so that inventory can be properly maintained.
  • Ensure that all equipment is properly lubricated at the start of and throughout the shift, as required by the preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Ensure that equipment is properly set up and on time for all production runs.
  • Make ongoing periodic checks on equipment during operation to ensure satisfactory operation with good output quality and to spot potential problems.
  • Make adjustments to equipment and replace worn parts as required, ensuring a minimum of downtime. Must work closely with supervision and production staff to ensure that the best-scheduled periods are selected for maintenance, or to best utilize labour during emergency repairs.
  • Ensure that implemented changes deliver the desired results and to continue to work on improvements if optimal production efficiency is not achieved. Problem areas must be reported to the supervisor.
  • Make shop repairs to equipment when required. Note: any unscheduled shut-down of more than 1/2 hour must be reported to the supervisor at time of occurrence, or to production supervision during off-shifts.
  • Make necessary repairs by using hand tools or shop equipment. Basic skills are required in machining and welding.
  • Perform troubleshooting of electrical equipment and circuits. Must be able to locate and change fuses, electric motors, read electrical drawings etc.
  • Log all relevant incidents into the maintenance log by the end of each shift. This information must be provided to ensure proper communication of facts that occurred during the shift.
  • Ensure that the maintenance shop and other work areas are kept in a neat and orderly fashion and that all safety rules are practiced
  • Undertake special tasks as requested by the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Physical inventory twice annually.
  • Maintain, repair, install and test switchgear, transformers, switchboard meters, regulators and reactors
  • Maintain, repair, test and install electrical motors, generators, alternators, industrial storage batteries and hydraulic and pneumatic electrical control systems
