As a Journeyman Electrician Workforce Trainer at GRID Alternatives, you will bridge the gap between field knowledge and the next generation of tradespeople. This role involves delivering hands-on instruction, developing curriculum, and mentoring learners to ensure a continuous pipeline of safe, code-compliant, and highly skilled electrical workers.

Requirements

  • Active Colorado Journeyman Electrician license, in good standing.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of electrical installation experience (solar PV preferred) across residential, commercial, or industrial electrical systems.
  • Strong understanding of NEC and local electrical codes.
  • Experience leading teams or supervising job sites.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions and perform physically fast-paced tasks.
  • The position requires driving; you must therefore hold a valid driver's license from the state of Colorado. Should you have a license from another state, you are generally legally permitted to work while using it, provided you meet the specific residency rules of your state of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with solar PV systems installation, building, or commissioning.
  • Previous experience in adult education, corporate training, or apprentice supervision is highly preferred specifically with adult learners.
  • Experience working with diverse or underserved communities.
  • Bilingual/multilingual skills (especially Spanish).

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineering and creative teams to optimize system builds and project execution for electrical (AC/DC) aspects of solar electric projects. This includes commercial and residential systems as well as energy storage, EV chargers, and main service panel upgrades.
  • Perform and coordinate residential and commercial solar PV installations in accordance with NEC, local codes, and GRID Alternatives standards.
  • Act as the licensed Journeyman Electrician on job sites, ensuring adherence to regulations, safety, and quality.
  • Lead crews of volunteers, trainees, and staff in daily installation activities.
  • Coordinate with inspectors, utilities, and permitting agencies as needed.
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems and resolve technical issues in the field.
  • Assist in the procurement process of all electrical equipment.
  • Work collaboratively with all GRID Colorado and HQ departments. Attend team meetings, representing the organization in a positive manner to utility partners, potential donors, funders, sponsors, and the general community.
  • Deliver hands-on training in solar installation, electrical fundamentals, safety, and job readiness.
  • Develop and adapt training plans tailored to diverse learning styles and skill levels.
  • Mentor trainees, apprentices, and program participants, providing constructive feedback and career mentorship.
  • Evaluate participant progress and help track program outcomes.
  • Assist with course material preparation, update lesson plans, and align instruction with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the latest industry technology.
  • Ensure OSHA standards and GRID Alternatives safety protocols are followed at all times.
  • Conduct jobsite safety briefings and ensure accurate use of tools and PPE.
  • Maintain accurate documentation related to installations, inspections, and training activities.
  • Represent GRID Alternatives’ mission and values at job sites and within the community.
  • Foster an inclusive, respectful, and encouraging learning environment.
  • Engage volunteers, partners, and homeowners in understanding solar technology and its benefits.
