About The Position

Georgia Power's Network Underground Services (NUS) plays an integral part in Georgia's economy, providing construction & maintenance services for underground network electrical systems across Georgia. NUS serves high-profile customers with highly reliable electric service. This role is for a Cable Splicer (CS) based out of Atlanta, Augusta, or Savannah, requiring availability within a certain distance of the assigned operating headquarters. No relocation assistance is available.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the electric utility industry required.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a Journeyman Cable Splicer required.
  • Underground Network experience required.
  • Experience with work involving energized secondary conductors up to 600v is required, both lead & EPR.
  • Construction and maintenance of underground network systems is required.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude.
  • Knowledge of hand tools.
  • Skilled in the use of hydraulic and battery tools.
  • Skilled in the use of equipment directly related to underground network systems.
  • Knowledge of proper use and application of cover-up in energized situations.
  • Ability to work in enclosed spaces such as manholes, vaults and tunnels where entry requires access by ladders.
  • Ability to work at heights in lifts, buckets, scaffolds, etc.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, repair and restore service on the underground network system.
  • Knowledge of the underground network and hi-rely distribution systems.
  • Ability to receive instructions, directions and translate into actions.
  • Must be available for scheduled or emergency call out which could include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Must be available to travel outside of the state for storm restoration as needed.
  • Valid Class A CDL license is required.
  • Max weight – 270 lbs. fully clothed (includes hard hat and work boots) due to weight-restricted equipment.

  • Distribution underground experience is strongly desired.
  • Knowledge and use of heavy equipment directly related to underground network systems is a plus.
  • Experience working outdoors with heavy equipment directly related to underground network systems is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all cable related construction and maintenance for the underground network and other high reliability distribution across the state of Georgia.
  • Receive training on construction and maintenance activities associated with Network & Hi-rely Distribution systems, including operating procedures for all equipment involved (cranes, lifts, aerial devices, cable pulling equipment).
  • Work in enclosed spaces such as manholes, vaults & tunnels, requiring entry by ladders, and work at heights in lifts, buckets, scaffolds, etc.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the installation, splicing and terminating of various electrical cables (e.g., 3-phase Paper Insulated Lead Covered Cable (PILC), Cross Linked Polyethylene Cable (XLP), Ethylene Propylene Rubber (EPR)).
  • Install cables and equipment within the underground network and hi-rely distribution systems.
  • Lower and lift 50-pounds or more while maintaining positive control.
  • Operate/Drive Company Vehicles including Splicing Vans.
  • Operate heavy equipment (Winch truck, boom truck, forklift, or similar equipment).
  • Work in adverse conditions outdoors – day and night hours.
  • Be available and accessible at least 50% of the time for emergencies, which could include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Be available for travel outside of the state to support storm emergencies as needed.
