Citi•Tampa, FL
•$96,960 - $145,440

About The Position

Citi is seeking a Java & Microservices Developer at the Assistant Vice President level to build mission-critical, distributed backend systems supporting global, 24x7 financial transactions and real-time payments. The role provides technical leadership for high-throughput, low-latency platforms and drives cloud-native Java microservices using Spring Boot, Kafka, and AI-accelerated engineering practices. The developer will work with product managers, enterprise architects, and cross-functional engineering squads to turn complex business and regulatory requirements into robust, production-ready solutions. The position focuses on reliability, performance, and availability of critical platforms, including a stated 99.999% availability target. It also involves promoting the AI-Assisted Product Development Lifecycle (AI-PDLC), applying modern financial messaging standards, and supporting secure, resilient services and deployment practices. The role is based in Tampa, Florida, and is full-time.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of hands-on Java software engineering experience, with deep proficiency in Java 17/21, concurrency utilities, Virtual Threads, memory management, and advanced JVM performance tuning.
  • Demonstrable experience designing, developing, and operating production-grade microservices using Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, and reactive programming paradigms.
  • Deep expertise in event streaming and messaging architectures using Apache Kafka or RabbitMQ, including partitioning strategies, distributed transactions, and idempotency patterns.
  • Practical mastery of microservices architecture patterns including API Gateway, SAGA, CQRS, Event Sourcing, Transactional Outbox, Circuit Breaker, and Service Discovery.
  • Hands-on experience integrating AI-assisted developer tools, such as GitHub Copilot, Devin, and AI code analysis tools, and AI-PDLC practices into team delivery workflows.
  • Proficiency with Docker and Kubernetes or OpenShift in high-availability environments.
  • Competency with Git-based version control workflows, automated CI/CD pipelines, and Agile delivery methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional technical, product, and business leadership.
  • Bachelor’s degree or university degree, or equivalent experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree.

Responsibilities

  • Build high-throughput, low-latency Java microservices for 24x7 real-time transaction processing, applying patterns that support zero data loss and uninterrupted availability.
  • Build event-driven streaming and messaging architectures using Apache Kafka.
  • Promote and institutionalize AI-PDLC across engineering squads using generative AI developer tools and autonomous agents while enforcing security and governance standards.
  • Construct resilient cloud-native services using Spring Boot and Spring Cloud, including centralized configuration management, service discovery, distributed tracing, and mTLS security.
  • Implement financial messaging standards and payment protocols, including ISO 20022 (pacs, pain, camt), real-time payment schemes, and industry-standard financial networks, with appropriate data security and cryptographic controls.
  • Optimize data access and persistence across distributed SQL and in-memory caching solutions to maximize throughput and achieve sub-millisecond execution times.
  • Apply Java concurrency, Virtual Threads, memory management, and JVM garbage collection tuning to deliver performant, thread-safe backend architectures.
  • Partner with SRE to establish observability standards using OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, and Splunk, and lead performance profiling, chaos engineering, and volume stress testing.
  • Lead technical design and code reviews, mentor engineers, and provide architectural guidance to improve engineering excellence, code quality, and security across squads.
  • Guide deployment and management of containerized workloads on Docker and Kubernetes or OpenShift, supporting CI/CD automation and zero-downtime deployment strategies.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 401(k).
  • Life, accident, and disability insurance.
  • Wellness programs.
  • Paid time off, including planned vacation, unplanned sick leave, and paid holidays.
