The Janitorial Department Manager leads the janitorial team, ensuring the cleanliness and maintenance of the store and surrounding areas. This position oversees janitorial staff, manages cleaning schedules, maintains janitorial supplies, and ensures a safe and sanitary environment for employees and customers. The Janitorial Department Manager also provides excellent internal customer service to staff, customers, and vendors. The Janitorial Department Manager reports to the Store Manager. Schedule: Varies, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Often starting at 3am. Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt Reports to: Store Manager

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of janitorial or facilities maintenance experience, with at least 1 year in a leadership role.
  • Experience working in a retail or grocery setting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of cleaning techniques, sanitation standards, and janitorial best practices.
  • Excellent leadership, team management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Email).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to work in and around the perimeter of the store, including both indoor and outdoor environments, in various weather conditions.
  • Primarily standing for extended periods while performing cleaning tasks.
  • Frequent bending, grasping, reaching, pushing, and pulling while handling janitorial equipment and supplies.
  • Regularly lifting 10-40 lbs, with occasional heavier lifting as needed.
  • Ability to operate janitorial equipment, including mops, vacuums, floor scrubbers, and other cleaning tools.
  • Ability to climb ladders occasionally for high-reach cleaning tasks.
  • Exposure to moderate to loud noise levels, including paging systems, human voices, music, and machinery.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all janitorial operations, ensuring store cleanliness and sanitation meet Co-op and regulatory standards.
  • Hire, train, and develop the janitorial team, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Schedule staff efficiently to meet store needs while managing labor budgets.
  • Provide ongoing feedback, coaching, and performance evaluations to support staff growth and success.
  • Maintain strong communication with store leadership regarding cleaning priorities, safety concerns, and maintenance needs.
  • Model and ensure excellent customer service within the department and store.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to internal and external customer inquiries, concerns, and requests.
  • Train janitorial staff on customer service expectations and safety protocols.
  • Ensure that janitorial operations support a clean, safe, and welcoming store experience.
  • Establish and maintain efficient cleaning routines and schedules.
  • Monitor and maintain janitorial supply inventory, ensuring timely ordering and cost-effective purchasing.
  • Ensure proper care and maintenance of janitorial equipment, including mops, vacuums, floor scrubbers, and cleaning tools.
  • Maintain clear documentation of cleaning tasks, including restroom and facility cleaning logs.
  • Coordinate with external vendors for specialized cleaning needs (e.g., floor care, pest control, waste disposal).
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and sanitation regulations.
  • Train staff in proper handling of cleaning chemicals and equipment, following OSHA and Co-op safety standards.
  • Maintain SDS (Safety Data Sheets) for all cleaning products and ensure staff are trained in their proper use.
  • Oversee snow and ice removal from store grounds as needed to ensure customer and staff safety.
  • Identify and report facility maintenance concerns, collaborating with store leadership for resolution.
  • Work within budgeted labor and supply costs for janitorial operations.
  • Manage janitorial supply purchasing, ensuring cost-effective ordering and proper stock levels.
  • Process invoices and maintain accurate records of janitorial expenses.
  • Participate in storewide initiatives, meetings, and events as required.
  • Keep the Store Manager informed of any challenges, opportunities, or necessary improvements.
  • Promote and uphold Co-op principles, mission, and values.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Store Manager.
