Full-Time Janitor
About The Position
Reporting to the Manager, Capital Projects & Asset Management, the Janitor is responsible for maintaining a high standard of safety, cleanliness and sanitation in all Haisla Nation Council’s facilities and keeping them in an orderly condition, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all community members, staff and visitors. The Haisla Nation is the band government of the Haisla people. Our mission is to build a powerful, prosperous and proud community, healthy in mind, body and spirit. We believe in building a strong and thriving community, with healthy and happy members and a sustained and prosperous environment. We are about 1962+ people, with approximately 532 living in Haisla (Kitamaat Village). We have lived off the land and waters of our traditional territory for thousands of years, and it remains the focus of all we do.
Requirements
- High-school diploma or equivalent.
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System certificate required.
- Ability to utilize safe work practices.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction as well as part of a team.
- Basic knowledge of health and safety regulations.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to handle complex and emotionally challenging situations.
- Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals.
- Physical ability to perform tasks, including ability to lift heavy objects as needed.
- Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings, as needed.
- Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).
Nice To Haves
- Building Service Worker Certificate preferred.
- First Aid, Level 1 preferred.
- Previous experience in janitorial or custodial work is an asset.
- Experience working for a band government or Indigenous organization is an asset.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Valid BC driver’s license and own vehicle is an asset.
Responsibilities
- Sweep all floors, entrance ways, and stairs.
- Vacuum rugs.
- Mop all floors, including offices.
- Clean and service all washrooms daily.
- Wipe and sanitize all touch points daily.
- Provide cleaning services during and after community events to ensure venue is returned to its original state.
- Clean gymnasium floor and bleachers.
- As time permits, dust, wash walls, and windows.
- Remove and properly dispose of waste (regular waste, recycling and organics) from all areas.
- Arrange and dismantle tables and chairs as needed.
- Remove and properly dispose of waste from all areas.
- Properly dispose of recycling.
- Identify and report any damages, possible repairs, or maintenance needs.
- Respond promptly to any safety hazards or concerns within the facilities.
- Track inventory and report any required supplies that need to be ordered.
- Wear all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Follow all health and safety regulations, including the proper handling and storage of cleaning utensils, as well as the Haisla Nation Council’s policies and procedures.
- Other duties as required.
