About The Position

The daily duties of the position may consist of completing data entries into the Jail Management System, maintaining daily logs, completing intake questionnaires, housing classification, and thorough record keeping. Jailers also complete safety checks in the jail and upon intake of a detainee, and fingerprint and book detainees using a Livescan machine. They serve inmate meals, conduct showers, inmate searches, and maintain a safe jail environment in accordance with Title 15 BSCC Standards. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential qualities of a Jailer.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required at time of application and as a continuing condition of employment
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Knowledge of mathematics
  • Knowledge of modern office equipment operation
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures of record keeping
  • Ability to operate modern office equipment
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to read, understand, learn, interpret and comply with Federal, State, County, City and Departmental codes, regulations, laws, policies and procedures
  • Ability to write clear and accurate reports
  • Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with the public and jail inmates
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends
  • Ability to think and act quickly in emergency situations
  • Ability to use good judgment in dealing with inmates and the public
  • Ability to analyze situations accurately
  • Must show proof of full Covid vaccinations prior to being hired

Nice To Haves

  • Current or previous experience working in a Custody Facility
  • Previous experience working with or volunteering with a Law Enforcement Agency
  • Experience with Mental Health services, either in a paid or volunteer role
  • Time Management
  • Experience with de-escalation
  • One year of experience working in a Custody Facility is highly desirable
  • Either paid or volunteer experience with a Law Enforcement Agency is highly desirable
  • Experience with Mental Health services, either in a paid or volunteer role, is highly desirable
  • Associate of Arts in Administration of Justice, Police Science, Jail Management, or a related field is highly desirable
  • Completion of PC 832 and a core course on PC 6035 is desirable
  • Valid CPR & First Aid Certificate issued by American Red Cross highly desirable
