About The Position

This position is responsible for tasks pertaining to prisoners that do not require the service of a police officer. The Jailer maintains the security and well-being of inmates confined to the jail, performs custodial duties, and handles various administrative tasks related to prisoner management.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • No felony convictions.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the control and custody of prisoners.
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the laws and regulations concerning the privacy and security of criminal justice information.
  • Skill in the performance of custodial duties.
  • Skill in the operation of laundry equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of a prisoner transport van.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Must be employed on July 1 of the fiscal year to receive personal leave.
  • Must successfully complete a drug test and background investigation before final appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, photographs, and fingerprints prisoners as necessary.
  • Maintains prisoners’ personal property.
  • Maintains the security and well-being of inmates confined to the jail.
  • Performs custodial duties in the upkeep of the jail and associated areas.
  • Transports or releases prisoners to officers for transportation to court.
  • Obtains and serves food to prisoners.
  • Provides commissary service for prisoners.
  • Maintains prisoner money accounts.
  • Launders jail uniforms and blankets.
  • Transports work release prisoners to and from work sites.
  • Administers prisoners’ medications.
  • Operates technical equipment to secure officer and inmate safety, including body scanners, cameras, Central Square, LiveScan, and MULES.
  • Maintains records of property released to parties other than inmates.
  • Monitors inmate telephone calls for bonding purposes.
  • Processes bonds for other agencies and maintains accurate paperwork for court.
  • Maintains accurate paperwork for sentenced inmates, work hours, commissary, etc.
  • Maintains CPR certifications and knowledge of first aid.
  • Maintains Taser and OC (mace) certifications.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of radio communications and use of radio policies.
  • Operates jail control room equipment.
  • Trains new employees on operation.
  • Maintains a log of inmate allergies.
  • Communicates with doctor/nurse regarding medication procedures, transcribes orders, administers insulin, and performs blood sugar checks.
  • Transports federal inmates to court or doctor/dentist appointments.
  • Oversees federal inmates with video court appearances.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
