About The Position

This position is open until filled. The Human Resources Office is unable to provide status updates by telephone. The salary range is listed above. Starting salary will depend on qualifications and experience. The Jail Cook performs work in planning and providing food related services within the County Detention Center. An employee in this class is responsible for the preparation and serving of food to inmates within the County Detention Center. The employee prepares, serves, sanitizes, and cleans the kitchen area. Work involves ordering, maintaining, and storing foods and supplies. This requires public contact in maintaining arrangements with various vendors in the purchase and delivery of food items. The employee follows a general menu established by Nutritionist but determines day-to-day regular and special menus based on availability and cost of supplies to fulfill the requirements of the program. Patience and firmness are required in frequent contacts with inmates. Work is performed under the direct supervision and is evaluated through observation, review of budgets, and quality of food served.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of related experience and training in food preparation and nutrition, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain ServSafe Certification in food safety and preparation.
  • Must meet the minimum standards set by the State of North Carolina for detention facility personnel.
  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must be at least twenty (20) years of age.
  • No felony convictions or serious misdemeanors.
  • Must pass a drug screen.
  • Knowledge of methods of preparation and cooking of food in quantity lots.
  • Knowledge of the use of adaptabilities of various pieces of cooking equipment used in commercial and institutional kitchens.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in food service activities.
  • Skill in food preparation and handling.
  • Ability to maintain high standards of food sanitation within work environment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.
  • Ability to get along with others, and work effectively with the public and co-workers.
  • Ability to multi-task and work within deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Plans standard menus and prepares special diet menus for the inmate population, as well as the senior citizens program.
  • Maintains records of inmates served.
  • Monitors and inventories stock.
  • Participates in the preparation of complete meals in the County Detention Center kitchen; starts the cooking process, seasoning, observing while cooking, removing when done, and placing food in warming devices and serving containers.
  • Performs kitchen work to include cooking and baking.
  • Performs related functions to include cleaning, washing dishes, and stocking inventory.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
