IT Systems Operations Engineer

Astreya•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Astreya is seeking an IT Systems Operations Engineer to provide business-hours support for existing Linux and Windows systems and engineering applications for a leading AI organization. The role owns support cases, troubleshoots emerging issues, implements practical fixes, and partners with engineering teams to address workflow gaps and prevent repeat problems. The ideal candidate works independently, prioritizes by impact, communicates clearly, and improves systems and documentation. The engineer supports existing endpoints, servers, applications, connectivity, and access within delegated permissions. The role includes troubleshooting and configuring Linux and Windows systems, resolving device management and application issues, investigating network and identity problems, escalating complex issues to engineering teams and vendors, and contributing tested configuration, documentation, and small tooling improvements where qualified. The position also maintains reusable troubleshooting guides and provides weekly operational summaries.

Requirements

  • Experience administering Linux endpoints and servers at scale, including troubleshooting systemd services, logs, packages, file permissions, and SSH.
  • Hands-on Windows endpoint and server administration, including troubleshooting services, Event Viewer errors, software installations, drivers, and RDP.
  • Working knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, and VPNs, with ability to diagnose connectivity issues from endpoint through network.
  • Experience diagnosing endpoint enrollment, compliance, configuration, and application deployment failures using management tools and device-side logs.
  • Ability to diagnose application launch, connectivity, license-checkout, and sign-in failures, and trace group membership, provisioning, and SSO issues with application and identity owners.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize by impact, investigate unfamiliar issues, identify recurring gaps, and keep users and engineering owners informed through resolution.
  • Experience applying scoped fixes to existing systems, testing affected workflows, documenting results, and reverting unsuccessful changes.
  • Strong written communication, including clear case notes, actionable engineering and vendor escalations, and reusable troubleshooting documentation.
  • Familiarity with Git, infrastructure as code, and configuration management sufficient to follow existing review and rollout processes.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to contribute small fixes to existing scripts or tools using Bash, Python, or PowerShell.
  • Experience with Jamf, Intune, Chef, or Entra ID.
  • Experience supporting robotics labs, shared devices, macOS, or virtual desktop environments.
  • Experience troubleshooting engineering applications such as Teamcenter/NX, including client setup, connectivity, and licensing.

Responsibilities

  • Triage assigned requests and agreed support channels during business hours; keep accurate records of impact, diagnostics, priority, status, next action, and owner.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and configure existing endpoints, servers, applications, connectivity, and access within delegated permissions.
  • Document change notes, test results, and recovery steps, and verify the affected user workflow before closing repairs.
  • Escalate issues with impact statements, reproduction steps, logs, attempted fixes, and specific requests for assistance; secure a receiving owner and next action, and follow through to resolution or accepted handoff.
  • Identify recurring failures and workflow gaps; deliver tested configuration and documentation fixes and small script or tool changes where qualified.
  • Route larger changes to engineering as scoped work items with supporting evidence and acceptance criteria.
  • Maintain reusable troubleshooting guides and provide a weekly summary of resolved cases, open blockers, recurring issues, and improvement status.
  • Troubleshoot and configure Linux and Windows workstations, servers, and shared or specialized devices, including services, permissions, and connectivity.
  • Resolve device enrollment, compliance, software installation, update, and self-service software delivery failures.
  • Diagnose application launch, connectivity, and licensing failures; coordinate with engineers or vendors and verify user workflows.
  • Investigate Wi-Fi, DNS, DHCP, routing, and VPN issues; apply approved fixes or escalate with diagnostic evidence.
  • Troubleshoot sign-in, permissions, group membership, and provisioning; restore approved access and repair request workflows with owners.
  • Contribute small configuration or tooling fixes where qualified and improve support procedures with engineering partners.
