This National Guard position is for an IT Specialist (Network) (Title 32) (Permanent), Position Description Number D2181P01 and is part of the VA 192 FTR WG, National Guard. As an IT Specialist (Network) (Title 32), GS-2210-11, you will administer the base Local Area Network (LAN), implement new network operating systems hardware and software, and develop base-wide network operating procedures. You will analyze LAN utilization statistics through data collection and performance measures to ensure the smooth, reliable, and robust operation of LANs, including classified and unclassified networks. Responsibilities include coordinating LAN installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and fine-tuning components like virtual servers, hubs, switches, and routers for peak efficiency. You will also assist in the development, configuration, installation, and maintenance of network systems, including LAN/WAN, and maintain an inventory of all network hardware and software. The role involves installing, configuring, and troubleshooting network and application server hardware, network operating system software, and peripheral network equipment. Problem analysis to identify trends, ineffective practices, and equipment shortcomings is crucial. You will identify and document network requirements, determine facility environment compatibility, and conduct in-depth analyses of network usage, user complaints, traffic interruptions, and hardware/software capabilities. Recommendations for system modifications and corrective actions to optimize equipment utilization will be made. The position requires using benchmarks, performance measurement, and evaluation data, along with modeling and simulation techniques, for capacity planning and supporting additional workloads. Forecasting future needs, preparing recommendations, justifications, and specifications for LAN equipment, and determining when improvements in networking capability are needed are key duties. You will develop test procedures and participate in progress reviews to determine reliability, productivity, user-friendliness, applicability, and compatibility of systems. Ensuring applicable operation and maintenance policies and standards are maintained, reviewing literature on state-of-the-art advances, and assessing their impact on current configurations are also part of the role. Inquiries and problems must be expeditiously resolved. A significant aspect of the role involves maintaining required information assurance certification IAW DoD 8570.01-M, Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002, and Clinger Cohen Act of 1996 to ensure rigorous application of information security and assurance policies. You will serve as a network security administrator, ensure the optimum performance of the base firewall, implement directed technical solutions for network compliance, and set up and maintain account restrictions, user rights, password controls, and user access controls. Assisting IT security specialists, conducting risk analyses, security tests and evaluations, tracking network security patches, and accomplishing risk analyses, accreditation, and certification packages are also required. Developing reports and submitting them as required, adhering to management control plan requirements, and performing other duties as assigned are also part of the responsibilities.
