Island Caretaker (Seasonal)
About The Position
We are seeking a dependable, hands-on Island Caretaker to oversee the day-to-day upkeep and operation of Nautilus Island in Castine, Maine. This is a unique, seasonal opportunity for someone who enjoys working independently, takes pride in maintaining beautiful spaces, and is comfortable living and working in a remote coastal environment May through October. We are ideally looking for someone interested in returning season after season. This role offers the opportunity to live and work in a beautiful, private island setting with a high level of autonomy and ownership over your work. It is ideal for someone who enjoys nature, solitude, and hands-on work.
Requirements
- Strong general handyman skills (plumbing, painting, light carpentry, etc.)
- Comfortable operating a small boat (experience preferred)
- Self-sufficient, proactive, and able to work independently
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Physically capable of performing maintenance tasks in an outdoor environment
- Willingness and interest in returning for future seasons
Nice To Haves
- Prior experience in property maintenance, facilities, or similar roles preferred
Responsibilities
- Open and prepare the island for the season in May; close and winterize in October
- Perform general maintenance and repairs across buildings and grounds
- Handle basic plumbing, painting, carpentry, and upkeep projects
- Maintain cleanliness and functionality of all structures and outdoor spaces
- Operate and navigate a small boat for transportation, errands, and light logistics
- Monitor island systems (water, power, etc.) and address issues as they arise
- Coordinate with vendors or contractors when needed
- Ensure the island remains safe, functional, and well-maintained throughout the season
