About The Position

Under general supervision, this role installs, maintains, and repairs sprinkler and drainage systems in landscape and slope areas. Work is performed throughout the community, often independently, with resident contact for discussion and routine problem resolution. More difficult issues are referred to the Irrigation Foreman. The technician will set irrigation clocks, adjust sprinklers and watering schedules according to water management practices, inspect systems, diagnose malfunctions, and perform necessary repairs to valves, heads, pipes, clocks, and related parts, including soldering. Responsibilities also include assisting in system construction or revision, maintaining assigned equipment, repairing backflow prevention devices, driving a truck, and maintaining a truck inventory of materials. Effective teamwork, communication, and problem-solving are essential.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and apply common sense understanding to the carrying out of oral or written instructions.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.
  • Knowledge of the water requirements of a variety of commonly used ornamental plants in differing soil types.
  • Knowledge of the principles, operating characteristics and maintenance of large complex electrically controlled sprinkler systems.
  • Knowledge of field maintenance requirements of assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the electrical and plumbing trades.
  • Ability to locate, correct and adjust defects in specialized equipment.
  • Ability to perform manual work requiring physical strength and stamina appropriate to the area of assignment.
  • Ability to read and write work-related job instructions in English.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others in English.
  • Ability to pass exam required for back flow prevention devices.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment appropriate to the nature of assignment.
  • Skill in driving trucks and passenger vehicle.
  • Possession of a valid CLCA Irrigation Certification.
  • Ability to talk, hear, walk for periods of up to 5 hours a day, drive daily the truck/utility vehicle, use hands to finger and grasp, kneel, pull, push, stoop, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to occasionally balance, climb and crouch.
  • Reading, problem solving, and customer contact.

Nice To Haves

  • Considerable experience in the maintenance and repair of complex remote-controlled irrigation systems or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Sets irrigation clocks for watering schedules as directed and as required to accommodate various activities.
  • Adjusts sprinklers and watering schedules following water management practices to meet plant requirements.
  • Inspects sprinkler and drainage systems throughout the community as assigned.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions in the system and related control mechanisms.
  • Performs repairs to valves, heads, pipes, clocks, and related parts of sprinkler and drainage systems.
  • Performs soldering repair as required.
  • Assists in construction or revision of sprinkler and drainage systems.
  • Maintains assigned equipment.
  • Repairs back flow prevention devices.
  • Drives a truck and maintains a truck inventory of materials.
  • Follows up on assigned written resident complaint requests, corrects problems, discusses with resident or refers to a supervisor.
  • Drives utility vehicle inside assigned area and may be required to drive truck and trailer for transporting equipment.
