About The Position

The City of Cedar Park is seeking an Irrigation Technician I/II to perform skilled labor with a major emphasis on irrigation maintenance, installation, plumbing, and electrical repair. This role involves operating a central control irrigation system and performing general park duties. The technician will manage and program the Hunter Irrigation Central Control computer system, make seasonal adjustments based on weather and field conditions, and conduct irrigation inspections and audits. Responsibilities include maintenance and repair of sprinklers, drip lines, and fittings, with a commitment to repairing leaks within 24 hours. The role also entails inspecting and repairing irrigation clocks, satellites, gate and ball valves, and valve boxes. Additionally, the technician will repair and inspect Reduce Pressure Zone Assemblies (RPZ) and Backflow devices, perform irrigation electrical repair, troubleshooting, and installation (including 2-wire systems), and test backflow devices. For Irrigation Technician II, training and licensing are required. The position involves planning and implementing water conservation practices, maintaining detailed blueprints and diagrams of irrigation systems, and recording water usage data. Irrigation design and installation are also key aspects, along with providing technical expertise to contractors, vendors, gardeners, volunteers, and City staff. Other duties include irrigation wire and pipe locating, operating necessary equipment for installation and maintenance, inputting tasks into the Lucity Work Order program, and ordering parts and tools. The role also includes maintenance and repair of water and dog fountains, toilets, sinks, hose spigots, and pipe, as well as preparing facilities for cold weather to prevent freeze damage. Clearing clogged sinks, toilets, and drains, testing electricity at park facilities, and repairing electrical outlets, light fixtures, and ballasts are also part of the job. The technician will also be involved in fertilizer, herbicide, and insecticide calibration and application, maintaining records of these applications, and changing door locks and hardware annually. Coordination, leadership, and participation in ground preparation for planting, cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and pruning are expected. Mowing, propagating, and trimming grass and brush, including the use of light equipment and handheld tools, are also responsibilities. The role includes training other employees in irrigation systems, lawn and plant care, spraying, cultivating, and equipment operation. The technician will keep the Foreman informed of job status and developments regarding pests or diseases. Operation of necessary vehicles and tools, including pickup trucks, chainsaws, carpentry tools, and garden tools, is required. Maintaining safety standards in the Parks and Recreation shop area and performing other related duties as assigned are also part of the role.

Requirements

High School Diploma, or its equivalent.
Two (2) years of general maintenance experience (for Irrigation Technician I).
Four (4) years of general maintenance experience (for Irrigation Technician II).
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
TCEQ Irrigation License required within 90 days of obtaining the position (for Irrigation Technician I).
TCEQ Irrigation License AND Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester License (for Irrigation Technician II).
Valid Texas Driver's License, with acceptable driving record.
Knowledge and use of all necessary equipment related to construction surveying.
Ability to repair brass pipe and fittings.

Nice To Haves

Pesticide Applicators License preferred (for Irrigation Technician II).

Responsibilities

Performs skilled labor with a major emphasis in irrigation maintenance, installation, plumbing, and electrical repair.
Operates central control irrigation system and performs general park duties.
Manages and programs Hunter Irrigation Central Control computer system.
Makes seasonal adjustments to irrigation systems based on weather and field conditions.
Conducts irrigation inspections and audits (2-3 times per calendar year).
Maintains and repairs over 6,000 sprinklers.
Maintains and repairs thousands of feet of drip line and drip emitters.
Repairs leaks of irrigation pipe and fittings within 24 hours (typically 3-4 leaks per week).
Inspects and repairs all Irrigation Clocks and/or Satellites.
Repairs broken and/or leaking gate and ball valves.
Installs, levels, and repairs Irrigation Valve Boxes.
Repairs and inspects Reduce Pressure Zone Assemblies (RPZ) and Backflow devices.
Performs irrigation electrical repair, troubleshooting, and installation, including 2-wire systems.
Tests all necessary backflow devices.
Plans and implements Water Conservation Practices (e.g., seasonal adjustment of run times, use of weather stations).
Maintains detailed blueprints, diagrams, and “as built” for all City Irrigation Systems.
Records water usage data.
Performs irrigation design and installation.
Provides technical expertise to outside contractors, vendors, gardeners, volunteers, and City staff.
Performs irrigation wire and pipe locating using specific equipment.
Operates all necessary equipment for the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems.
Inputs all irrigation-related tasks into the Lucity Work Order program.
Orders all parts and tools necessary to complete the job.
Performs maintenance and repair of all 45 water and dog fountains located at City parks.
Installs, repairs, and maintains toilets and sinks.
Repairs hose spigots and pipe (including brass) at Community Gardens and park facilities.
Prepares all facilities, water fountains, and community gardens for cold weather to prevent freeze damage.
Clears clogged sinks, toilets, and drains.
Tests electricity at all park facilities and pavilions prior to rentals.
Repairs electrical outlets.
Repairs and installs light fixtures and ballast.
Inspects and repairs photocells and/or motion sensors.
Inspects and repairs hand dryers.
Performs fertilizer, herbicide, and insecticide calibration and application.
Maintains accurate records of Fertilizer and Pesticide Applications.
Changes all door locks and hardware annually at tennis courts and other park facilities.
Coordinates, leads, and participates in preparing ground for planting, cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and pruning flowers, shrubs, and trees.
Mows, propagates, and/or trims grass and brush, including use of various light equipment and handheld tools.
Helps train other employees in the proper care of irrigation systems, lawns, and plants, spraying and cultivating of shrubbery, hedges, and trees, and the operation and care of tools and equipment.
Keeps Foreman informed regularly on job status.
Watches for pests, disease, or other deteriorating agents and keeps Foreman informed of developments to ensure eradication.
Operates necessary vehicles and tools, including pickup truck, chainsaw, carpentry tools, and garden tools.
Cleans and maintains safety standards in the Parks and Recreation shop area.
Performs other related duties as may be assigned.
