Requirements

  • 3-4 years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a helper role.
  • Knowledgeable of MIC Health and Safety programs and project-specific regulations.
  • Actively participate in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors when on-site.
  • Set a personal example of safe behavior.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Add and subtract two-digit numbers, multiply and divide with 10's and 100's, and perform these operations using units of weight, measurement, and volume.
  • Common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (including but not limited to safety-toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hardhat, vest, etc.).
  • Ability to move in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas.
  • Ability to work at heights and abide by all safety and fall-protection requirements; must be able to wear and utilize all safety equipment required for work at heights.
  • Ability to evaluate information based on measurable standards.
  • Ability to see details in objects or drawings and recognize slight differences in shapes and shadings.
  • Ability to visualize objects in three dimensions from drawings.
  • Ability to maintain good balance and work at heights.
  • Ability to see well (either naturally or with correction).
  • Ability to hear well (either naturally or with correction).
  • Ability to coordinate the use of eyes, hands, and feet.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret measuring tools such as tape measure, speed square, framing square, etc., to perform tasks accurately.
  • Fully understand plant north and drawing direction.
  • Assist in setting up hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural-steel members.
  • Assist in fastening steel members to cable of hoist, cable, slings, or rope.
  • Assist in guiding members using a tag line (rope), and pull, push, or pry steel members into approximate position while supported by a hoisting device.
  • Assist in forcing members into final position using turnbuckles, sleever bars, come alongs, jacks, and hand tools.
  • Assist in aligning holes in members with corresponding holes in previously placed members by drifting drift pins or using a wrench handle through holes. Align bolt holes with spud wrenches, sleever bars, bull pins, and/or drift pins.
  • Assist in bolting aligned members to keep them in position until they can be permanently bolted or welded.
  • Assist in cutting and welding steel members to make modifications using oxyacetylene torch, cut off wheels, porta bans, and arc electric welding equipment.
  • Work in other crafts at levels appropriate to training and skills as requested by project supervision.
  • Take direction from a higher-skilled worker or foreman.
  • Possess basic knowledge of the construction processes involved in heavy industrial construction.
