About The Position

This position involves conducting internal investigations in the field. The role requires devising, organizing, and executing effective strategies for interviewing complainants, subjects/suspects, and witnesses, as well as obtaining, documenting, and reviewing evidence such as body-worn cameras, personnel records, incident reports, and use-of-force documents to reach supportable findings. The Investigator II will gather, analyze, correlate, and evaluate facts and evidence, including interview statements, personnel files, incident reports, supervisory documentation, use-of-force reviews, body-worn camera footage, and phone records to identify links in the chain of evidence. The role also involves locating witnesses by interviewing employers, public agencies, families, neighbors, and others, and accessing various databases and records from justice partners. The Investigator II will establish dialogue with witnesses, conduct follow-up interviews, and consult with an attorney-supervisor and/or other members of the Office of Constitutional Policing to update progress, clarify information, and develop additional areas for investigation. This position provides support for internal disciplinary processes, including investigations into allegations of misconduct by sworn LASD employees. The Investigator II is responsible for preparing detailed reports and memoranda in a timely and organized manner using Microsoft Office and Excel, and for maintaining and organizing case files by ensuring all relevant reports, memoranda, and materials are properly preserved.

Requirements

  • OPTION I: Three or more years of full-time experience as a sworn law enforcement officer conducting criminal investigations.
  • OPTION II: A Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
  • Full-time experience is evaluated on the basis of a 40-hour work week.
  • Must attach a legible and official photocopy of your POST profile, credentials, certification, or documentation verifying current or previously held sworn law enforcement officer status to your application at the time of filing or within seven (7) calendar days from the date of application filing (for Option I).
  • Must include a legible copy of the official degree, official transcripts, or official letter from the accredited institution which shows the area of specialization with your online application at the time of filing or within (7) calendar from the date of application filing (for Option II).

Responsibilities

  • Independently conducts internal investigations in the field by devising, organizing, and executing effective strategies related to interviewing complainants, subjects/ suspects, and various types of witnesses, and obtaining, documenting, and reviewing other factual evidence and records (i.e., body worn cameras, personnel records and files, incident reports, use-of-force review documents etc.) in order to reach supportable findings and conclusions.
  • Gathers, analyzes, correlates, and thoroughly evaluates observed facts and evidence including interview statements, personnel files and records, incident reports, supervisory documentation, use-of-force reviews, body worn camera footage, and phone records in order to identify links in chain of evidence or information.
  • Obtains information concerning the whereabouts of witnesses by locating and interviewing employers, public agencies, families, neighbors, and others; accessing the internet and information databases (e.g., CLEAR, LexisNexis, Department of Motor Vehicle records), and records of other justice partners and agencies in order to complete an investigation.
  • Interviews and obtains information from witnesses by establishing a dialogue and proactively conducting follow-up interviews and investigation in support of the case.
  • Consults with attorney-supervisor and/or other members of the Office of Constitutional Policing in order to update progress, clarify related information, and/or recommend and develop additional areas for investigation.
  • Provides support for internal disciplinary processes including investigations into allegations of misconduct by sworn LASD employees.
  • Prepares detailed reports and memoranda in a timely and organized manner including by using Microsoft Office and Excel in order to clearly and accurately document and convey data and investigation progress and findings.
  • Maintains and organizes case files by ensuring all relevant reports, memoranda, and materials considered to be evidence are properly preserved in order to support investigations and conclusions.
