About The Position

WNDU in South Bend, Indiana is looking for an Investigative Reporter/MMJ. This role involves in-depth investigation, including filing records requests, working with sources, gathering documents, and presenting complex stories clearly and fairly across all platforms (on-air, online, and social). The position requires regular on-air presence as part of the 16 News Now team, and the ability to investigate breaking news with an investigative angle, bringing depth and accountability to developing stories in real-time. The ideal candidate will have the necessary skills and experience to uncover and report on significant issues.

Requirements

• Proven investigative or accountability reporting experience; demonstrated work product is required.
• Track record of using public records, data, or documents to break original stories.
• Ability to work at two speeds simultaneously: daily investigative hits and longer-term series development.
• Strong on-camera presence and MMJ skills; ability to shoot, edit, and present own material, and be a visible face of the 16 News Now brand.
• Source development skills with existing relationships and the ability to build new ones.
• Ability to take a dense, document-heavy story and make it matter to a general audience.
• Unshakable ethical standards and understanding of the weight of investigative work.
• Comfort with legal and editorial scrutiny; ability to document reporting and stand behind it.
• Resilience to handle complicated investigations, cold sources, and extended story development timelines.
• Valid U.S. driver's license and ability to drive a company vehicle.
• Ability to carry 35+ pounds of gear.
• Experience in shooting and editing unique content.

Nice To Haves

• A journalism-related degree is preferred, but not required; body of work must speak for itself.
• Familiarity with ENPS, Arc, and Edius is a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities

• Drive original daily investigative and enterprise reporting for WNDU, focusing on accountability journalism that appears in every newscast.
• File and manage public records requests (FOIA, state open records) as a core reporting tool.
• Utilize data, documents, and records to construct stories.
• Develop, cultivate, and protect confidential sources across government, law enforcement, business, and the community.
• Examine breaking and day-of news through an investigative lens, gathering records, sourcing context, and fronting stories that offer in-depth reporting.
• Manage multiple long-form investigations simultaneously at different stages of development.
• Shoot, write, edit, and present own stories as a full MMJ, owning the story from pitch to air.
• Translate complex investigative findings into compelling, accessible content for broadcast, digital, and social audiences.
• Collaborate with editorial leadership on story development, legal review, and publication strategy.
• Uphold the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and SPJ ethics in all reporting.
