About The Position

Sinclair’s Spotlight on Maryland is seeking Investigative Journalists to produce high-impact, accountability stories for digital, social, print, and television platforms. These stories aim to expose problems, hold government and elected leaders accountable, and advocate for solutions, providing meaningful content that impacts the communities served. The role requires strong news judgment, compelling and fact-based writing, and the ability to multitask. Candidates should have a clear understanding of story digging, research, and writing with a thought-provoking edge. Knowledge of FOIA, computer-assisted reporting, data-driven reporting, and legal issues related to investigative news reporting are essential. Strong writing skills, knowledge of current events, and dynamic storytelling abilities are a must. This is a highly collaborative environment, requiring the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) process.
  • Knowledge of computer-assisted reporting.
  • Knowledge of data-driven reporting.
  • Familiarity with legal issues related to investigative news reporting.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Knowledge of current events.
  • Dynamic storytelling skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Must be a strong storyteller with the ability to make the complicated understandable.
  • Must be able to use all available tools to enhance stories, from graphics to social media.
  • Should be able to generate story ideas and determine the legitimacy of viewer tips.
  • Strong writer, storyteller.
  • Must be naturally inquisitive with an interest in holding government officials accountable.

Nice To Haves

  • Three (3) years of reporting/producing experience preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain contacts and sources in the community to enterprise story ideas.
  • Identify and pitch investigative angles on big daily news stories.
  • Work closely with local and corporate news leadership to refine investigative pitches and story scripts.
  • Write online, print, and broadcast versions of investigative reports.
  • Produce digital-specific content for each investigation.
  • Other duties as assigned.
