About The Position

The Dock Crew Leader is responsible for performing tasks and assisting the Supervisor in overseeing a crew of employees who work at our outdoor loading dock and inventory control yard preparing and organizing plant orders and loading/unloading materials by hand or using equipment such as forklifts, bobcats, skid steer loaders, etc. This position also assists with the care of all plants, trees, shrubs, and perennials stored at the Dock and Inventory Control yard helping to ensure quality product and providing exceptional customer service to our customers. In the winter months this position participates in snow removal duties for our clients’ commercial and residential properties.

Requirements

  • Previous equipment operating experience (loader, bobcat, tractor or other used in nursery production) is required.
  • A minimum of 2-4 years of landscape maintenance/horticulture experience or education is required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age or older.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Ability to direct and lead employees of various skill level and experience to ensure desired end result.
  • Ability or willingness to learn basic pruning skills and knowledge of perennials, shrubs, and trees.
  • Ability or willingness to learn to operate a bobcats, forklifts, skid loaders, trucks and tractors.
  • Stands and walks for long periods of time throughout the day.
  • Stoops, bends, squats or kneels and lifts objects from ground frequently.
  • Full extension of arms above head and in front of body.
  • Consistently lifts heavy loads weighing 50 pounds or more
  • Regularly carries and pushes/pulls weights of up to 50 pounds.
  • Activities requiring agility and balance, such as climbing
  • Possesses good balance to work on uneven ground conditions.
  • Ability to communicate in English

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or related field is preferred.
  • Nursery and Greenhouse Applicator Certification is helpful but not required.
  • Previous foreman or crew leader experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of flowers, trees, shrubs and other landscape products is helpful but not required.
  • bilingual with ability to communicate in Spanish is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Directs, organizes, and helps oversee tasks to assure quality and timely completion of work to ensure exception customer service for both internal and external customers.
  • Loads plant material for customers, ensuring customers have all the material requested.
  • Helps with unloading shipments and pulling plants for orders.
  • Operates equipment including trucks, tractors, forklifts, bobcats and skid steer loaders.
  • Assists with watering, pruning, weed control, and general plant care duties.
  • Mentors new and current Crew Members on an on-going basis.
  • Assists customers, coworkers and sales staff in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Maintain a neat and organized work area to service the customers as efficiently as possible.
  • Communicates any issues related plants and quality to Plant Care Specialist or Supervisor.
  • Communicates effectively with coworkers, customers, delivery drivers and sales staff to ensure efficiency.
  • Works in a safe manner, along with other employees.
  • Assist with snow removal during the winter months.
  • Follows company safety policies and procedures at all times.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor/manager.
  • Provides direction and delegation of tasks to crew members.
  • Provides mentoring, coaching, constructive feedback and training of crew members.
  • Fosters a positive team-oriented work environment, resolving issues as they arise.
