About The Position

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking an experienced Intravenous Nurse, I.V. Nurse. Join our dedicated team as an Evening shift I.V. Team Registered Nurse (RN III), where you'll collaborate with healthcare professionals to provide expert intravenous therapy management to a diverse community, including DPH, DMH, DOC, DDS, and Shelter clients. Under the guidance of the Nurse Manager, you'll advocate for patients and ensure seamless coordination of intravenous therapy, adhering strictly to infection control guidelines. Hours: 7:00AM-3:30PM Working every other weekend day. Days off are assigned.

Requirements

  • Apply knowledge of scientific theories and principles of nursing related to IV therapy and chemotherapy.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and doctors.
  • Work collaboratively with nursing unit staff.
  • Utilize knowledge of drugs used in emergency situations.
  • Apply emergency procedures, including CPR.
  • Establish rapport and interact tactfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Maintain a calm demeanor in stressful or emergency situations and interact with individuals under stress.
  • Accurately document and maintain records.
  • Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
  • Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Implement the nursing process in partnership with the healthcare team to deliver skilled IV therapy to a diverse clientele, including community, DPH, DMH, DOC, DDS, and Shelter clients, under the Nurse Manager’s guidance.
  • Initiate and oversee IV therapy, ensuring adherence to infusion therapy standards and integration into Individual Care Plans.
  • Conduct daily assessments of IV sites for infiltration and phlebitis.
  • Perform arterial blood gas sampling.
  • Assess and maintain central line sites, changing dressings per policies and standards.
  • Address IV line issues and respond to emergency codes, performing necessary IV access and related duties.
  • Perform STAT blood draws as needed.
  • Rigorously adhere to infection control guidelines and aseptic techniques.
  • Meticulously document interventions, procedures, and situational occurrences in line with established standards and regulations.
  • Engage in research activities and contribute to performance improvement initiatives.
  • Commit to continuous professional growth through mandatory reviews, skill updates, performance appraisals, and participation in educational programs and professional organizations.
  • Ensure quality patient care and promote a therapeutic environment by serving as an advocate and resource for staff, patients, families, visitors, other departments, and outside agencies, addressing complaints, clarifying policies, and maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Enhance safety, risk management, infection control, productivity, and cost effectiveness by assessing and overseeing the environment to minimize incidents and accidents, and efficiently managing services, supplies, pharmaceutical stock, and equipment.
  • Perform ICU-specific competencies and support Intermediate Care Unit staff as needed.
  • Provide age-appropriate care and cater to patients' cultural and spiritual needs.
  • Respond to all Code emergencies and insert intraosseous needles when IV access is unobtainable.
  • Maintain CPR and ACLS certification.
  • Function on nursing units as a staff RN when required.
  • Insert PICC lines using a venous ultrasound machine and troubleshoot long lines when occlusion is in question.
  • Ensure proper placement of long lines via x-ray, and perform mid-line catheter insertion for IV antibiotic therapy.
