Interpreters facilitate basic communication between clinical staff and clients or patients, which includes parents or guardians. Communication may take place in a medical or community setting, providing interpretation, sight translation and/or simple translation on an AVS (After Visit Summary). Medical Interpreter course completion through a Technical School or higher education institution strongly preferred. Requires at minimum a High School graduate or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED). Must pass verbal and written proficiency tests with an overall score of 80%. Includes proven Spanish linguistic abilities in medical interpreting and knowledge of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) code of ethics. Knowledge of basic medical terminology used in primary care and dental services through completion of Medical Terminology class. National certification must be completed within 2 years of hire either through CCHI or the National Board, and certification must be maintained.
