About The Position

Mater is seeking applications for Interpreter - Somali to join us in a part time role (0.2 FTE), based at our South Brisbane campus within the Language Services team starting mid-August / early-September 2026. While based in South Brisbane, this role will be supporting the brand new Mater Hospital Springfield which opened in early 2026. This state of the art facility meets the needs of the growing Greater Springfield region. With a mix of public and private beds across ICU, maternity, emergency and medical, surgical services, it’s set to care for over 200,000 patients annually. In this role, you will deliver professional interpreting services across on-site, telephone and telehealth settings, supporting communication in Somali. You will hold current accreditation with the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) and play a key role in facilitating clear, accurate communication between patients, their families and Mater staff.

Requirements

  • NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) Certified Interpreter in Somali
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology and 5 years’ experience working within a multidisciplinary healthcare setting
  • Demonstrated Information Technology skills and competence especially with interpreting booking systems
  • High level interpersonal and communication skills as well as conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and to work in a team environment
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to perform well under pressure
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft applications and an ability to adopt Mater Hospital’s in house interpreting booking application
  • Fluency and literacy in English and Somali and NAATI Interpreter Certification or Accreditation
  • Demonstrated capacity to interpret in all medical settings including sound knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to identify and convey the social and cultural factors affecting health care to ensure high quality care provided to patients
  • Ability to identify ethical dilemmas and deal with them in compliance with the AUSIT Code of Ethics

Nice To Haves

  • A tertiary qualification in interpreting and translating is considered desirable

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and provide on-site, telephone and telehealth medical interpreting services across Mater sites as required in Somali whilst complying with the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT) Code of Ethics
  • Provide intercultural mediation for staff and the Somali community
  • Participate in Mater presentations relating to Language Services as part of a pre-approved training program coordinated by the Language Services manager
  • Participate in quality improvement activities as required
  • Maintain data and participate in research as required by the Language Services manager
