About The Position

The primary responsibility of this role is to provide direct interpretation and perform duties that aid in the provision of the highest quality of interpreting/transliterating services. This includes assignment preparation, consumer relations, and professional development. The interpreter will facilitate communication in academic classes, lectures, student activity events, and other special events, requiring receptive interpreting. Preparation involves reviewing notes, course outlines, required texts, and speaking with faculty, speakers, and students. The role requires collaboration with department staff, faculty, college staff, students, and administrators. Regular meetings with the Supervisor of Interpreting Services are necessary for reviewing evaluations and development activities. The interpreter will assess the language or communication modes of consumers and demonstrate continuous professional development by upgrading skills, developing specialized content expertise, and enhancing interpersonal communication through continuing education and training. Travel to alternative sites for assignments may be required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • 2 years experience preferably in a college or university setting required
  • Valid Texas Driver License
  • Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreter (BEI) Basic Certification required; applicants who are not currently certified will be considered provided they agree to obtain the certification within 12 months of employment (as a condition of their continued employment)

Responsibilities

  • Interpret/transliterate basic to higher level academic classes, lectures, student activity events, and other special events as needed, where receptive interpreting would be required.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing notes and course outline, previewing required texts and course materials, and speaking with faculty, speaker, and/or students.
  • Work collaboratively with department staff, faculty, college staff, students, and administrators.
  • Meet regularly with the Supervisor of Interpreting Services to review evaluations from consumers and from supervisor observations for development activities.
  • Assess language or communication modes of the consumers served.
  • Demonstrate continuous professional development by upgrading interpreting skills, developing specialized content expertise, and enhancing interpersonal communication skills through participation in continuing education, in-service training, and related educational opportunities.
  • May travel to alternative sites for interpreting assignments as needed.
  • Perform other duties, tasks and assignments as required.
